Food Network

Okay, I'll start one :)

I liked Chopped too, Fman, and we have been watching the Worst Cooks in America (gotta be somewhat staged) and Guy vs Rachel, though this season is over.

Also we've been watching old episodes of Iron Chef.

What does everyone think of Restaurant Impossible?

Re: Food Network

Not a fan of Robert Irvine, I find myself watching the Food Network less these days. I used to like Unwrapped, that host Marc Summers was very badly injured in a car accident a while back, severe head trauma.....he's recovering last I read.

Gwreck alluded to it in the other thread and I agree.....Triple D was better before, I guess that makes sense with the very nature of the show......just like Iron Chef.....never watch that now.

Re: Food Network

Is THAT what happened to Unwrapped? OMGoodness, I wondered where it went.

We hadn't watched Iron Chef in ages, but watch the old ones once in a while now.

Also miss Alton Brown's show (though he got annoying after a while).

I can't imagine that some of those restaurant makeovers in RI actually please the owners. Usually they are done on the cheap and not only look it, but are so ugly it's ridiculous. I don't know who told his designers they could design.

My wife enjoys that one, I find the host abrasive. They did renovate a restaurant here in town that we have still yet to check out, it looked nice when they were done.

My wife and son also enjoy the show where they have the New Jersey mobster-type film the restaurants for shenanigans by the staff. Don't know what that one is called, Restaurant Stakeout maybe?

I prefer the original Iron Chef, that is dubbed in English and starring the all-Asian cooking staff. I am not really an Alton Brown fan, he comes off to me as a bit too pretentious.

Yeah, the Uncle Jack's Steakhouse guy. BetterHalfer digs it. I watched a few, but by the third or so, the formula got a little... familiar.

Really? Among humans, maybe. Among the televised-chef crowd, a crowd which includes Ina F*cking Garten and Tyler F*cking Florence and Scott Conant and... not so much, right? To me, Brown's passion is obvious, and that goes a long way to cover up a lot of ills. (For what it's worth, my late mom agreed with you-- I'm not sure I'd ever seen her roll her eyes harder than she did while I was watching a Thanksgiving episode of his at her house.)

Re: Food Network

I dig Chopped. A competition reality show you don't have to invest a whole season in watching, plus I like Ted Allen. My Mom digs Food Network Star and loves to call me to discuss it so I try to keep up, but for season-arc cooking reality I prefer Top Chef even if its become a bit of a bore itself.

Alton Brown is ok with me. But geez I've seen enough Bobby Flay to last a lifetime.

Re: Food Network

Me too; I get tired of them always picking Bobby Flay to challenge on Iron Chef.

One thing I like about Food Channel is that you don't hear constant "beeping" when they have to censor bad words. Geez that drives me nuts. I would rather hear the F word than "beep beep beeping beep".
I guess what I am saying is that the people on the shows have enough class not to swear constantly.

I've been watching Chopped some. They had the guy on from the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas so I was rooting for him. I like that do to the rushed pace and usually simpler ingredients, you can actually play along in the sense that "hmm, maybe fry the potatoes and make a sauce out of that item..". The one they did with leftovers in the basket was neat.

Does anyone find this woman entertaining? I'm bored to tears with her and that's just from the commercials for her shows.

Re: Food Network

She is less strident on the shows :) On America's Worst Cooks, she is snarky but you have the feeling it's an act (I hope) Haven't watched the Chef Wanted one; that looks too intense for me.lk

Re: Food Network

Whenever there's a rumor in The Washington Post that Restaurateur X is n talks with the Food network to get a show/appear on somebody else's show, it's always somebody who's given us a vibe of... kinda crazy.

Usually from a restaurant that's more or less OK, but we never want to go back to because it feels like a cult.

Except this guy, whose the opposite. Doesn't seem crazy, but Oprah made him a TV star, and put him at the top of the gourmet cupcake movement, despite the fact that his batter tastes like there's sand in it.

We, like the rest of Young America, were ADDICTED to the old overdubbed Iron Chef shows. Brilliant on so many levels.

Big fan of Alton Brown, big fan of DDD.

"So today chefs, your task is to make a complete dinner out of ... Rack of Lamb; Mongolian Wheat Grass; Orange Marmalade; and Kellog's Fruit Loops. You have 12 minutes"

Re: Food Network

Throw the lamb in the microwave for 11 minutes, then throw out the wheat grass (yuck). Take a coffee break for 10 minutes and 55 seconds. When the microwave beeps, take the lamb out and stick the Loops to the outside, using the marmalade as glue.

DONE.

Aha, BUT, they never use a microwave :)

Otherwise, it sounds yummy!

I think I'd crush the Fruit Loops and mix it into the marmalade and make a coating/glaze. Wheat grass would be a garnish, adding the color I sacrifices by crushing the Loops.

Re: Food Network

i'm thinking hte wheatgrass and marmalade go together into a glaze. the froot loops get separated out in terms of colors and pulverized, then applied as a color-blocked dusting after cooking to create a wickedly psychedelic meal.

pair it with a salad again featuring a hint of wheatgrass and marmelade in a vinaigrette. keep the froot loops the fuck out of hte salad.

Re: Food Network

I'd smash the fruit loops and combine them with cayenne for a sweet-hot dry rub on the lamb. Marmalade & wheatgrass combined in a gravyish thing. I'll be moving onto the dessert round.

I want to be the guy who sets up the baskets on Chopped. My first basket would contain spackle, lawn mower clippings, Pez, and a live puppy.

Re: Food Network

Iron Chef doesn't interest me. It's not realistic for my purposes because if all I've got in the house is fruit loops, wheat grass and marmalade, I'd just as soon order a pizza. The Barefoot Contessa, on the other hand, might come off as a snob to some, but her recipes are at least grounded in realism. I liked the Food Network a lot more when they aired mostly straight recipe shows. I don't like this new wave of contest/competition shows. My favorite cooking show is on PBS: Test Kitchen/Cook's Country. Less "Bam" and personality-making and more cooking instructions.

We like TK/CC as well. Here is a really interesting piece from the Times magazine about Christopher Kimball and the whole empire he has built around the magazine and TV show.

My brother-in-law's former boss went up against Douchey Fuck Face Ass Wipe Dribble Lips Bobby Flay on Iron Chef and got her ass handed to her. BTW, they had a pretty good idea of the secret ingredient a few weeks ahead of time which means it's another fixed show.

Mini Ted likes watching Cupcake Wars. Chopped is a cool show.

Then they invented this thing called the internet and you can just google and eyeball 17 recipes in 5 minutes and customize it to your own taste.
