Mike Rizzo sitting in, going on about how the Nats respect everybody in the division, with hat tips to the Phillies, the Braves, the Marlins..."and we're not looking past the Mets, either," which is code for "we're looking past the Mets."

I read how the Mets have told Travis not to block the plate in spring training. The other day I saw him dive into a runner trying to score. IIRC he dropped the ball. I expected to read something about this in the NYC rags. Nada. He dived into the runner sliding, hands and glove first. I winced and thought, yikes, good thing he didn't get hurt. So, is that kind of play okay from a teams standpoint? He wasn't blocking the plate in any way but he did something that could be just as dangerous. I agree with the "not blocking the plate" during spring training, but this business of runners never being able to collide with a catcher during the season is ridiculous. If a team orders its catcher to never block the plate due to possible injury, that's their right and they can let those runs score. But you can't make it so that running down a catcher blocking the plate (with the ball) is against the rules. These guys get paid well to take these chances. Maybe there can be some specific kind of insurance introduced that can cover/apply to this situation. I don't know if I ever would have gotten so much into baseball if I didn't watch the 1970 All Star Game on TV and witnessed that bruising Rose put on Fosse. I know that shortened Fosse's career, but that's the way it goes. The play at the plate is one of the most exciting plays in baseball.

Landon Powell looks as big as a house, and about as fast.

Make that extra inning. Final after ten innings 4-4, Mets.
