2013 IPP: Robert Carson

How about Robert Carson?

The Mets bullpen may not be as good as we want it to be, but it does seem to be crowded. My guess is that Carson will be a victim of this crowding to at least some degree. I'll say that he gets into more games in Vegas than with the Mets. Put me down for 25 big league games and an ERA of 4.20.

i think they'll want to carry a 2nd LHP if they can, and he's the only one on the roster right now. If he pitches well enough to at least match Feliciano, Rice and Laffey, he'll have the roster edge.
Of course, if 3 or more of Atchison, Hawkins, Famiglia, Burke and E.Ramirez all pitch much better than Carson, they may just go with 1 LHP, Josh Edgin. Which is a distinctly possible scenario.

I see it the same but different. I think if he pitches as well as Feliciano, Felciiano gets it. Carson stares up as his autographed Bobby Myrick poster and waits for sporadic opportunities in between injuries to Feliciano, Byrdak, and Edgin. Fifteen games and 4.44 ERA. One or two big moments. Makes Utley look silly but maybe Howard makes him pay in July.

Shortly after a big strikeout during a Sunday night game against Atlanta, he comes out as gay. Most Met brass and some teammates voice support but his opportunities don't exactly improve. John Franco says something dumb to the media which the Mets rush to disown, but it's clear that a fissure in the clubhouse is festering. And a fester is fissuring, the full extention of this won't be known until after the season.

Michelle Obama gives him a celebrated call of support shortly after the season. His career beyond that is shrouded to me.

I don't know if the Mets really believe in him. They like him as an idea but not as an executor. Can we afford to carry a guy whose upside is lefty specialist? I think he gets the Vegas treatment to begin and if he's knocking them dead there he will get a call. But, I dunno

0-1, 4.99, in 10 games, 12.67 innings

It's impossible to have a 4.99 ERA in 12.67 innings .

yeah, maybe, because of their comfort level with Pedro. But it might depend on their roster situation; if they have to dump a guy (possibly losing him) to make room for Pedro, I think they'd have to be both blown away by Pedro's value over Carson, and value a 2nd LH over a comparable RHer already on the roster. If they seem roughly equivalent, why would they risk losing players to make room for a non-roster invitee? I mean, i know they do it sometimes, but i'd prefer they didn't if the rostered players are comparable to the non-rosterees.
