Debatable that's it's even a sport. Daytona today, only race I
watch in it's entirety.

it's weird because unless there are multiple crashes and pileups it's boring, who would have even known there was a race yesterday unless that huge crash occurred?

Re: NASCAR 2013 - Everyone's Favorite Sport!!

I only saw a few minutes of yesterday's race but the thing that struck me was how few fans were in the stands.

You've got to be an idiot to sit so closely at a NASCAR event. The sound is deafening, you don't get a good view of the corners or the overall race except where it passes you and then there's the danger from flying transmissions.

I will try to view some today but Lunchpail will be dominating the house with a playdate who knows.

Boogity, boogity, boogity boys, let's go racin'!

I predict Danica's gonna wreck. I think 18 or 29 will win but would like to see Stewart (Tony or Jackie) or Jeff Gordon take the checkers. Also have a thing for the 21 car.

Restart with 7 laps to go-- Johnson, Keselowski, and Biffle lead... Patrick 6th, Jeff Gordon 8th, Earnhardt, Jr. 9th.

This is exciting, I think, maybe!

I was about to ask if they had started the race yet or were still in the midst of their multi-hour pre-game show.
Only the NFL does excess to a greater degree than these folks.

I think it's a big waste of fuel and was somewhat annoyed that NASCAR went on when a couple of years ago, we as a nation banded together to drive less to save on fuel.

Heaven knows though, NASCAR fans seem to see something to love.

Yabbut, the telecast came on at like noon (without any indication that it was all fluff and not the actual race) and I think they finally got the green flag shortly before 2:00.
At one point they had a clock counting down and when it reached 0:00 ... nothing happened; the drivers were still just walking around without their gear on sipping drinks.

Maybe NASCAR is competing with the Oscars to see who can have the longest show before the show of the weekend.

Ya gotta have drinkin and chillin time.

Every sport has its own quirky and odd traditions.

I enjoy it..It's all good.

When I went to the Danbury Fair Racearena as a kid, the noise was about 90% of the fun.

We moved to the Danbury area a few years before they tore the Racearena down. We had friends who lived on the hill overlooking the place, and when the races were on, they had to leave their house because of the noise.

While we're on the subject of NASCAR, this news doesn't come as too much of a shocker:

Awful, but when you sell naming rights to the highest bidder, this is what happens. (link refers to a NASCAR race to be renamed the "NRA 500" thanks to a deep-pocketed sponsor anxious to open fire on a barrel full of fish.

Me I think it's in bad taste to say the least but I'm not the average NASCAR fan who drives to the track with a shotgun hanging in the back window.....

Re: NASCAR 2013 - Everyone's Favorite Sport!!

look at their sponsors over the years... tobacco, alcohol and now firearms. It's the ATF trifecta;
and discussing "bad taste" for a sport that began as illegal bootlegging and now is only enjoyed if there are spectacular (and hopefully life-threatening) accidents, is sort of besides the point;
and those are no more "stock cars" than the space shuttle is a plane;
and watching guys make 4 left turns 500 times at 200 MPH is not my idea of a good time.

A little hyperbole here perhaps...

I'd say "no", which still doesn't speak well for NASCAR.
