Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

HELP:

Hap Optimum, hated it and went to FiOS....loved it but not the monthly price for Ultimate Triple Play....over a two year contract I was paying $182 a month......contract was up and I got enticed back to Optimum with offers of a lower monthly bill...it's now $123 and all I am missing channel wise is MAX which is garbage anyway.......plus they sent me a Kindle Fire HD which is a $199 value.....

but damn everything I hated about Cablevision is still there.....the user interface as compared to FiOS is just awful....simple things like changing channels can take seconds( I know that sounds like a fat bastard American complaint but seriously), when I called Optimum about that they said anything under 10 seconds is acceptable......FiOS would change in a nano second....small things like this I really dislike.....press the On Demand button and it can take 20 seconds to come up, then it freezes...

anyway.....how can I get out of my two year contract with Cablevision wanting to hit me up for money? I have 22 months left.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

I would ask FiOS whether they would give you a credit for any fees you incur if you decide to switch back to them.

I don't know whether they would do that, but it couldn't hurt to ask. It's good marketing for them to pick up disgruntled customers from their competitors.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

from Cablevisions TOS

Termination of Service by Subscriber: Unless otherwise terminated, this Agreement shall automatically renew on a month-to-month basis. Subscriber acknowledges that upon such renewal all pricing is subject to change. Subscriber shall have the right at any time to terminate the Service by giving notice to Cablevision. In the event Subscriber elects to terminate the Service, Subscriber will pay for such Service until the date of disconnection. However, in no event, unless Subscriber fails to keep the scheduled disconnect appointment or fails to return the Equipment to an Optimum store, shall Subscriber pay for Service for a period greater than seven (7) days after Cablevision receives such notification of termination.

Bold is mine

looks like if I call them I have the right to cancel without incurring fees beyond that seven days??

That's what it looks like to me, based on that paragraph.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

So, got home and called Cablevision....told them I was moving back to Ireland(this lie is getting old :), what can they say right?, anyway, their system for cancelling service wasn't working at that moment in time(bullshit) so I was advised to bring all the equipment to an Optimum store and they will take care of me...the guy claimed to have extensive notes that they will see when they look up account....my only obligation with be the pro-rated bill and as they bill you in advance it really shouldn't be much......I guess they will charge me for the free KIndle which is fine as it's worth the $199.......

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

The other thing you can do, before you return all your Cablevision stuff, is to call Verizon and see what kind of a deal they'll give you if you decide to sign up with them. Their prices might be stated ahead of time but that doesn't mean you can't haggle over them - although you'll probably have a better shot a negotiating if they don't know you've previously been a customer who already left once.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

if you play your cards right, maybe you'll get a nice sign up present from Fios when you switch back.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

Yeah calling FiOS later, going to see if I can play them. They are offering pre-paid Visa cards worth up to $500, not sure if that is only for new customers.....but honestly I would rather go month to month.

it used to be nice when MCI and AT&T would fight over being your long distance carrier, and would offer you $50-100 to switch (and didn't seem to care how often that you would switch back and forth)...

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

Sure, but simply the fact that most areas have actual competition these days instead of the previous model of 'fuck you, we paid good kickback money for this monopoly so you've got no choice', it's now possible to play one off the other for better deals.
So start with something like; 'Hey, I'm not all that happy with those other guys and would consider switching to YOUR service for the whole TV, phone & internet shebang if you give me those new customer rates you were advertising a while back ... or it you guarantee that you'll lock me into the current rates for _____ months'

some areas have more than one Cable TV choice? Or are you counting Fios and Dish/Directv as competition?

Right. Not more than one traditional cable choice necessarily (although there may be some of those too) but the Dish & Phone companies providing the same services that CATV used to have an absolute headlock on makes a fucking world of difference to the consumer.
At one point on Long Island I was paying $75/month to Cablevision for a very limited cable service (I think I got MSNBC like 5 years after it was introduced) and nothing else. Within a year of FioS showing up and the rates were suddenly $100/mo for a MUCH better cable pacakge + internet + phone.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

Fios is (or was a year ago when I last signed up) month to month and locked in rates. at the time I got the free multi room DVR thing for the life of the service too.

Re: Cable TV and other miscellaneous crap

Had FiOS installed Saturday, same package as before except $40 cheaper(Ultimate HD-top tier)

Went to the Optimum store with all my equipment this morning, in and out.....told them we are moving to Puerto Rico... the guy imformed me that because they bill in advance they might owe me money...the Kindle Fire HD stays with me.....that's a gift he said.
