Facebook reporting a new arrival for Dublin hotshots Mr. and Mrs. Duan: Aoibhe Skye, pictured here with big sister Siena. I take it from the ankle bracelet monitor that little angel is already boosting cars. Congrats to Duan and Hilary.

Usually "Eva," but I think it's also gone down as "Eve" and "Ava."

Wow... If I had a thousand guesses I still would never have gotten it right.

It's like they make this shit up as they go, right? throw some random collection of vowels and a few consonants against the wall, and tell everybody its pronounced "Fred". Yer not fooling anybody, ya know.

congrats!

Re: Aoibhe Skye

Aspirate a B and it comes out with a V sound. The aspiration was done historically by placing a dot over the consonant and you'd get "Aoiḃe."

Aspirating a consonant by instead putting an H after it was really just a concession to the English way of doing things, as they (and we) use in an H to aspirate the G in words like ENOUGH, or both the T and the G in THOUGHT, so don't blame the Irish.

You've seen the construction before in girls' names such as "Siobhan" and "Maebh." You get a similar sound aspirating an M in the likes of "Niamh."
