Adopted: Gavin Cecchini

The first round pick from 2012 still had no forumommy or poppy. Well that's about to change, in light of his $10,000 donation to Hurricane Sandy relief.

I went to the Cyclones today (thankfully missed the Mets getting drubbed) and this was the only name in the lineup I recognized. I think he's missed a ton of time because his rate stats seemed low. He hopped a routine throw to first base which was ugly. he had some ugly swings too. its just one game though!

Cecchini, whom the Mets drafted 12th overall out of high school in 2012, ranks third among SAL shortstops with a .168 isolated slugging percentage—behind only 2013 college drafts JaCoby Jones (Pirates) and Pat Valaika (Rockies). This despite Cecchini playing half his games in the hitter’s graveyard that is Savannah and despite entering the season with a career .318 slugging percentage in short-season ball. Fully healthy this season, he’s showing off a rounded tool set that includes feel for the barrel, solid wheels and a strong defensive game. Mentioned in the main forum, but he hit in his tenth straight game last night and then was pulled with a leg injury. He's a first round pick. SOMEBODY believed that he'd turn that corner.

Yeah I'm not sure what specific 2013 injury BA is referring to, but it would be nice if whatever it was was now behind him and he could get on a steady forward path. And if nothing else the defensive reports (not just here but elsewhere as well) are good enough to where you don't suspect he's one of those who'll need to be moved off of SS down the road which would in turn make his hitting that much more critical.

Double-A Binghamton SS Gavin Cecchini has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month (Aug. 6). In 29 games in July, Cecchini hit a league-best .387 with a .453 OBP and .532 SLG, racking up a dozen multi-hit games which included his first career five-hit game.

An update on Cecchini on the occasion of his big league call-up http://www.minorleagueball.com/2016/9/8 ... -york-mets At age 22, Cecchini is in a good spot on the age curve, having fully proven himself as a hitter in the high minors. Even with the questions about his defense, he should be a valuable player going forward. I would not under-estimate his chances to improve even further with the bat. He's done enough to merit a Grade B entering 2017.
