Since my adoptees Lutz, Duda and Davis have moved up to the majors and out of my house, there is now room at the dinner table for another kid. So we're giving a home to a forgotten kid, the "other" player obained by the Mets in the R.A. Dickey trade - outfielder Wuilmer Becerra.

Welcome to the family. Make us proud.

He finished his first year in the organization last night. The GCL team didn't make the playoffs.
Still a kid, he's got to cut down on his strikeouts to move up.

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Bacerra

He was off to a fast start this year in more ways than one. According to the NY Post, he got arrested for drag racing.
I guess he misunderstood what it is to be "fast tracked".

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Bacerra

Interesting that the police report has the players holding only Venezuelan IDs and naming them as "30-year-old Vincent Lupo Perez and 19-year-old Wuilmer Gabriel Benavente."

One guy there is 10 years older than the Mets have him listed at and both are brandishing alternative names.

My kid went 5 for 5 last night, with two doubles and one RBI. That brought his season's average over .300 (.313) for Kingsport.

Fixed.
And the game before the 5 for 5, he had a 2 HR game. So now he's hitting .313/.365/.507 for an .872 OPS.

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Becerra

From Baseball America, which is currently writing about the top 20 prospects in each minor league:
18. Wuilmer Becerra, of, Kingsport (Mets)
Age: 19. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 190. Signed: Venezuela, 2011 (Blue Jays).
Becerra was one of three players to sign for more than a million dollars as part of the Blue Jays’ 2011 international crop, which had the second-highest expenditure in the game at $7.6 million. He missed most of his first U.S. season because his jaw was wired shut after being broken on a pitch. Blue-chip prospects Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud and Becerra were dealt for reigning Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey and extra pieces.
Becerra made developmental strides this summer as his tools began to impact games. He has a gap-to-gap approach and above-average raw power, with strength and leverage in his righthanded stroke. He finished third in the league in home runs. His plate discipline and strike zone awareness will need to improve, as most of his strikeouts came out of the zone. His swing has length from a deep load and Becerra’s stride was inconsistent.
The athletic Becerra moves well for his size and is at least an average runner out of the box who is an above-average runner underway. He ranges well in the outfield and has at least an average arm that should allow him to stay in right field.

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Becerra

My kid's off to a so-so start at Savannah.

From today's minor league report in SBNation:
Okay, it's thirteen games, but the power is there, the Ks haven't been egregious, and the tools are loud. So far so good in the jump to full-season ball. Beard needs work though.

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Becerra

From the BA Prospect Hot Sheet:
4. Wuilmer Becerra, rf, Mets

Team: low Class A Savannah (South Atlantic)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .448/.467/.759 (13-for-29), 9 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 1 BB, 5 SO

The Scoop: It probably will never be known as “The Wuilmer Becerra Trade.” When the Mets traded R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays after the 2012 season, the two prized prospects they received were Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud. They also got the Blue Jays to include Becerra, who had just finished his pro debut in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He had been a high-profile prospect in Venezuela the year before, when he signed for $1.3 million, but his first pro season was cut short when he had to have his jaw wired shut after getting hit in the face with a pitch. He has put himself back on the prospect radar by hitting .283/.325/.489 through 50 games at Savannah.

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Becerra

Finished the regular season a tinge below .300 in a pitchers' league and awful hitters' ballpark.
Will probably be listed among the top prospects in the league and is climbing up on the list of Mets' prospects.

Maybe some say it WILL be called “The Wuilmer Becerra Trade.”

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Becerra

My kid will be on the disabled list for the rest of the year. He had surgery to remove a cyst from his shoulder. One of the minor league analysts (in Amazing Avenue?) speculated that the pain in the shoulder is why he didn't hit with the expected power this year.

Heal fully kid.
We can wait for your break-out year in 2017.
His numbers this year were .316/.345/.398.

Re: Adopted: Wuilmer Becerra

I hope that's something more than wishful thinking in the face of disappointment, but his lack of power this season has been alarming. Making good consistent solid contact like he has, you'd think he'd log some homers if only by accident.
