Via the above link: Favorite listed is Archbishop Angelo Scola - Italy; Odds = 11/4

Do they really want to have a guy named Pope Scola?

Re: Pope to resign???

Yeah, he'd definitely have to change that.

Odds on the Next Papal Name

Pope Peter II: evens
(Sucker's bet here, as tradition reserves this name for the original only, and it would be the historic height of arrogance to proclaim yourself Pedro Dos.)[/*:m]

Pope Pius XIII: 4/1[/*:m]

Pope John Paul III: 5/1[/*:m]

Pope Benedict 12/1[/*:m]

Pope John XXIV: 12/1
(To take the name of the reformer every reform advocate loves? The media would plotz!) [/*:m]

Pope Leo XIV: 16/1[/*:m]

Pope Paul VII: 16/1[/*:m]

Pope Joseph/Josephius I: 16/1
(A pretty low odds point for what would be a debut.)[/*:m]

Pope Clement XV: 25/1[/*:m]

Pope Gregory XVII: 25/1
(This would put Gregory ahead of Benedict into second place among the most popular papal names. The last Greg, who died in 1846, was a strong traditionalist, and much hay would be made if a successor chose it now)[/*:m]

Pope Anthony I: 33/1
(As with Joseph, this would be a debut. Paddy Power seems to give weight to names that have a strong Italian tradition if not a strong papal one.)[/*:m]

Pope Julius IV: 33/1[/*:m]

Pope Nicholas VI: 33/1
(A daring choice if you want to present yourself as a protector of children.)[/*:m]

Pope Luke I: 33/1
(I don't know if Paddy means this as a debut or a re-continuance of the line of Lucius, in which case the nu pope would be Lucius IV.)[/*:m]

Pope Matthew I: 33/1[/*:m]

Pope Patrick I: 33/1
(Peter de Rosa wrote an excellent novel called Pope Patrick about an obscure and humble Irish cardinal attending a conclave to elect a successor to an ancient John Paul II and getting elected after a dozen ballots as a compromise choice. I recommend.)[/*:m]

Pope Andrew I: 40/1[/*:m]

Pope Augustine: 40/1
(An excellent choice if you're betting on a debut.)[/*:m]

Pope Celestine VI: 40/1[/*:m]

Pope Felix VII: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Franciscus I: 40/1 (Would be revolutionary.)[/*:m]

Pope Theodore III: 40/1[/*:m]

Pope Urban/Blessed Urban IX: 40/1[/*:m]

Pope Alexander IX: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Boniface X: 50/1
(It'd be cool to have a nice round X. It'd also have forbidden, bad-ass Malcolm X ring to it.)[/*:m]

Pope Charles I: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Gabriel I: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Honorius V: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Innocent/Blessed Innocent XiV: 50/1
(If he preached at CitiField, would the Mets take 14 out of retirement?)[/*:m]

Pope James I: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Simon I: 50/1[/*:m]

Pope Stephen X: 50/1
(Another X!)[/*:m]

Pope Danyon 66/1
(Is this a joke? Some Irish teen idol singer?)[/*:m]

Pope Ignatius 66/1
(A good bet. I don't think they're going to elect a Jesuit, but this name might be an impressive statement of rapprochement with the SJ.)[/*:m]

Pope Adrian VII: 80/1[/*:m]

Pope Kenneth I: 80/1[/*:m]

Pope Sergius V: 80/1[/*:m]

Pope Sixtus VI: 80/1
(Double Six!)[/*:m]

Pope Sylvester IV: 80/1[/*:m]

Pope Taine I: 80/1
(What's this about?)[/*:m]

Pope Valentine II: 80/1[/*:m]

Pope Victor IV: 25/1[/*:m]

Pope Damian I: 200/1[/*:m]

Pope Paddy Power: 500/1[/*:m][/list:u]

I think it'd be a really interesting precedent if he took a female saint's name, perhaps as a second name, like Pope Joseph Mary, or Pope Clement Magdalene. Perfectly common in the European traditional world. Common in religious orders too. But it'd be a shot heard round the world.

Edgy MD
Mar 12 2013 12:52 PM

The first vote ends with black smoke. Non habemus papam. What a terrific time for a papal fact!
LONGEST CONCLAVE: In 1268, a conclave began that lasted nearly three years — 33 months to be exact. Pope Gregory X was elected pope, but not before residents of Viterbo, north of Rome, tore the roof off the building where the cardinals were staying and restricted their meals to bread and water to make them hurry up. Hoping to avoid a repeat, Gregory decreed in 1274 that cardinals would only get one meal a day if the conclave stretched beyond three days, and served bread, water and wine if it went beyond eight. While the meals served these days at the Vatican’s hotel are by no means gourmet, the cardinals won’t go hungry — no matter how long they take picking a pope.[/list:u]

If Cardinal O'Malley becomes Pope, you would have to think he chooses Pius XIII, after Padre Pio, a fellow Capuchin (and likely one of the reasons the Italian public seems to be behind his candidacy).

Lot of buzz rising for Cardinal Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila, known for bouncing around the streets of the Philippines on a bicycle, and for being the College of Cardinals' most avid Facebooker. If all he did as Pope was to do away with the Popemobile and the security state that represented, I would consider it a heckuva legacy.

Problem is that all that biking is... healthy, and the guy looks about 35.

When bishops say "reformer," they mean "clean up the infighting at the Vatican"/"getting the Curia in order." They don't mean "substantive doctrinal/message change."

Re: ICT: Conclave of 2013

Well, the word isn't just coming from the bishops.

I think what it means --- from a brother bishop, from Anderson Cooper, or from Jim Martin, is "I expect him to do what I would have him do." And that is, of course, a coded way of saying, "I don't actually expect it, I'm lobbying for it, and by setting up that false expectation with this mic in my face, I'm putting pressure on him to at least move in that direction or be judged a failure." (Irish is already leaning that way.)

It's just a thing.
