Pep Squad

Which ten or twelve songs does every college pep band need to know? For some reason, soul classics of 1960-1965 seems to absolutely dominate the canon. (I guess it's the prevalence of horns and the birth of modern frat culture.) If you have the Blues Brothers down with a side dose of Animal House, you pretty much have yourself a college pep band.

I think a random sampling of NCAA men's basketball time-outs suggest the canon includes:

"Gimme Some Lovin'"[/*:m]

"Louie, Louie"[/*:m]

"Mony, Mony"[/*:m]

The intro to "I Just Can't Turn You Lose"[/*:m]

"25 or 6 to Four"[/*:m]

"Seven-Nation Army"[/*:m]

"September"[/*:m]

"That's the Way (I Like It)" (alone or as a medley with "Get Down Tonight" and "Boogie Shoes")[/*:m]

"Beat It"[/*:m]

"Thriller"[/*:m][/list:u]

Also, which songs would make a solid addition to the canon?

"Everybody Wants You"[/*:m]

"Vertigo"[/*:m]

"Roll with the Changes"[/*:m]

"Push It"[/*:m][/list:u]

"Song 2"
"Come Out and Play"
"Under the Sea"

Also, for the canon you overlooked "Hey! Baby!" by Bruce Channel which may be the one song that every pep band knows.

I guess I've heard it, but not so ubiquitously as those others. It must be the one they play while I'm in the restroom.

Are those last three suggestions, or are they already staples? I'm not sure what "Song 2" is.

Another staple from the early sixties: "Tequila."

Re: Pep Squad

"Party Rock" should only be played by marching bands.

The MIT band was playing that when I crossed the Mass Ave. Bridge into Cambridge during last year's Run to Home Plate 9K, and it sounded incredible.

"Stay" by Maurice Williams (and countless others) is another one I've heard at every college sporting event I've ever attended.

And yes, all those songs I've listed I've heard performed by pep bands. "Song Two" is originally by Blur. You'd know it if you heard it.

Re: Pep Squad

I would add "Jungle Boogie" and also "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again" to that list. And "Dance To The Music."

Re: Pep Squad

"Song 2" is the one that starts "WOOOOO HOOOOO" and then a fuzz of guitars.

Our band does most of those, but really brings it with more current stuff.

The Peter Gunn theme. A staple of the genre.

Oh, yes. I meant to include that when I dreampt this up last night, but couldn't come up with it when I posted. Another with early sixties/Blues Brothers pedigree, too.

"I Wish" and "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder got a lot of play at one point, I think.

Re: Pep Squad

"Gangham Style" sat next to "Harlem Shake" among cultural touchstones of the last year or so that I'd managed to avoid...

... 'til now.
