You're making out your will, and you want to specify 3 songs to be played at your funeral.
What are they and why?

Screw the music - I call dibs on G-Fafif writing my eulogy!

Re: funeral songs

I've already asked my wife to have people sing "The Parting Glass" at my funeral because it's obviously a song of farewell, and it makes me cry, but it also positive and uplifting.

Only one -- Fairy Rounde by the incomparable Mrs. Edgy.

It is so beautiful and I have the CD on my dressing table with a note taped to it just in case I meet my unexpected demise.

Edge--when is she putting out a new recording? I am her biggest fan!

It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll) - AC/DC I've spent a lot of my life taking the long way while wanting to rock and roll. Plus, there's a bagpipes solo.
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley's version of Cohen's song - I'm not sure that a more beautiful song has ever been written and Buckley's version breaks my heart every time.
We've Been Had - The Walkman - A song about being content with growing up and being OK with having grown older. It's where I'm at now that I've stopped taking the long way.

"When I Go" by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. I will have been gone, of course, but whatever. The song concludes with the lines:

Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so
All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me when I go.

"All The Time" by We're About 9. If I go in the next five years or so I expect them to show up and play it. The narrator is talking to his recently departed wife, and discussing their wedding picture, he says:

Now I have my hobbies, and I have my games
Today I changed the picture in our old oak frame
To a painting I made of a photo inside
That your father once took of me and my bride.
It's you in your white gown, it's me in my bow tie,
You with your blushing cheeks, me with my happy eyes.
It's you with your parasol, it's me with my hat.
Now we'll go down in history looking like that,
All the time, all the time.

"The One Who Knows" by Dar Williams.

For my kids. I don't even need to hear this song - I choke up just thinking about it.

Before the mountains call to you
Before you leave this home
I want to teach your heart to trust
As I will teach my own

But sometimes I will ask the moon
Where it shined upon you last
And shake my head and laugh and say
It all went by so fast

Re: funeral songs

This'll sound a little self-indulgent, but, well... it REALLY depends on the circumstances. The gist: the younger/more untimely I go, the more I'll want something a little consoling, cathartic, or redemptive; the older/happier I go, the more I'm going to want to explore the studio space a bit.

THE FORMER (for now):
PROCESSIONAL: "Many Rivers To Cross," Jimmy Cliff (FUCKING JOHN CUSACK FUCKING MOVIE STOLE MY SHIT, AND I'M STEALING IT THE FUCK BACK)
RECESSIONAL: "We'll Meet Again," Johnny Cash

THE LATTER:
PROCESSIONAL: "Bombs Over Baghdad," Outkast on a church organ, with pyrotechnics as appropriate
INTERSTITIAL MEDLEY: "Simon and Simon Theme"/"Airwolf Theme"/"Fat Albert and the Gang Theme"/"Ghost Rider Motorcycle Hero," Suicide/"Tijuana Taxi," Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
"Total Eclipse of The Heart," Bonnie Tyler (with live recreation of video, possibly involving my corpse as Bonnie Tyler)
RECESSIONAL: "We'll Meet Again," Johnny Cash/"Burning Hell," John Lee Hooker/"No Fun," The Stooges

Re: funeral songs

I have thought long and hard about this.....who the fuck wants to hear three depressing songs at my funeral?

So I have decided to piss them of instead

Gangnam Style

Ricky Martin, "Livin' La Vida Loca"

Los Del Rio, "Macarena"

Maybe if the wake is on a Friday you could throw some Rebecca Black in as well.

If you really want to piss them off, insist that it was your will to have them do the dances as well.

She does it all for me.

Actually I notice she does a certain amount of mailing-it-in, although pleasantly enough. For a few weeks at a time her between-songs remarks about a particular band will be exactly the same. Right now she follows every Eagles song by talking about how good Don Henley's concert was in Atlantic City recently and that the band is doing the 40th reunion on their 41st anniversary. Set your watch by it.

And somewhere probably in the same thread is my post about how much I didn't like her. But, y'know, different strokes, etc.

At my funeral I'd like to hear 'Streets of Laredo' [any one of several versions] and to make it really appropriate I've arranged it so that I'll die in a western gunfight.
