We lost our beautiful little Gavvie on Friday. She would have been 16 years old this summer. I miss her so much.

Re: Pet Thread 2013

Thank you all. She was so sick, and right up to the end she was the most loving little girl. She went from 14 lbs to just under 6 lbs in about a year. It was so hard to let her go. I still can hardly believe it.

Re: Pet Thread 2013

Again, thank you all. I know we all love our pets here.

I finally got up the heart to clean up her little part of our world -- a corner of the TV room. It's been a hard week, but it's getting a little better.

She has been my confidante (who better?) for a long time. This past year I have taken care of her in return. I have taken her for countless doctor visits, cleaned up her barf, changed her food many times, given her medicine (also, many different kinds), washed her face, held her tight and rocked her, given her baths, sung to her, and watched her waste away...

Last week, the day before she died, I wrapped her up inside my coat and walked around and showed her the plants that were starting to peek out.

Needless to say a Gavin Memorial Garden is in the works. Orange white and black, just like her.

I miss her so much.

Re: Pet Thread 2013

Wife took this the other day.

Some of you might remember the drama that surrounded our losing our previous dog Mookie and then acquiring this lovely girl, Bucky (short for Buckner).

That was about 5 years ago. This dog is the sweetest, most gentle, well behaved, good-natured dog you'll ever find. Easily the best dog I've ever owned (notwithstanding the fact that she got into the garbage last night…).

Re: Pet Thread 2013

A Facebook post from a Philly friend.

On the home front, Cathy (my wife) and I spent about 20 minutes earlier this afternoon desperately hunting through the house for our rescued Jack Russell, Bugs. When Cathy came through the door after her errands, the frantic insanity that typically attends her return was nowhere in evidence. Neither was Bugs.

We searched the house, room to room. The tiny South Philly yard, the back alley, 13th Street. Nothing. But, eventually, we became aware of piteous squeals coming from somewhere in the house. Our anxiety ratcheted ever higher as our search turned up nothing, but the cries continued.

After looking through every closet, cubby and niche, we realized the cries were coming from the basement. But we'd already searched every inch of that space. We stood silently in our flood-trashed cellar and then Cathy realized that the sounds, now just weak murmurs, were coming from behind the drywall.

I wrapped on the wall, heard scratching behind, and then tore through it with my hands. Out flew Bugs, (to borrow a phrase from Monty Python) like a rat out of an aqueduct.

Through it all, Franklin, our older dog, had maintained a calm, peaceful demeanor. I suspect he had something to do with this. Some type of canine "Cask of Amontillado" ruse to trap his rival.

Bugs is recovering... My nerves are shot.
