Cycling Thread 2013

Our thread from last year has already gone to archive heaven.

Best illustration of the difference between the ultra-warm early months of 2012 here in the northeast vs the much cooler-than-normal first 1/4 of 2013 so far:
- Bike miles to date thru the end of March 2012 = 363
- Bike miles to date thru the end of March 2013 = 45

Been out all of three times so far (twice during a brief warm snap early in March and once yesterday). Last year I think I had four or five rides before March even started because it was so warm in January & February.

I got some catching up to do.

Re: Cycling Thread 2013

I'm right there with you on the weather. I was able to get in about 30 miles at the end of last week.

It's been slow going so that I don't blow out my back after the 5 months of not riding.

Biked to work on Friday and today and took a pleasure ride with the kids (and the neighbor's kids) yesterday. My daughter is riding in the child seat for the first time and seems to love it.

WP - How is your child seat configured?

It's a Copilot bike seat on a rack on the back of the bike. Here's a picture of my son in the bike seat a couple of years ago.

Re: Cycling Thread 2013

I was doing an organized ride a bunch of years ago and caught up to a guy with one of those kid trailers on his bike.
Since the only way for the rider to actually see his kid in one of those is to turn around, I couldn't resist saying to him; "Say, was there a child in there when you started out"?
Fortunately the guy had a sense of humor and simply responded; "Damn, did he fall out again? ... I'll just pick him up on the way back"

Re: Cycling Thread 2013

I've done about 1200km this year, which is rather low compared to last year. Illness aside, I found cycling and deadlifting to be mutually incompatible activities, for the most part. I can't deadlift after cycling and can't cycle after deadlifting without feeling significant soreness in my lower back.
