IGT 4/3/2013: SDP @ NYM -- Head'less Padres in Topless Park

It's going to be cold and I'm going to be there as Matt Harvey's high heat looks to burn some underknown Friars.

Really looking forward to tonight's game. In many ways, I feel like Opening Day is its own event and the season really starts tonight.

Looking forward to watching Harvey.

I love how aggressive Havey is in the zone. These pitches are unquestionably strikes, but seem to be a place and speed that the batter absolutely isn't expecting and gives up on early. Everything hard, too.

Like David Cone with a strong upper body. I don't even want to make any comparison that rhymes with "weaver."

After years of watching Pelfrey get ahead and then bounce two curveballs away that fooled very few, it's revelation.

Ike's not only an enormous baseball monster, but he's so scary that his teammates wear away unis at home, because they're unworthy to share his sartorial choices.

And Nick Hundley dresses like a National, because if Ike gets angry he doesn't want to be recognized.

Until that last hit the only things Hawkins was giving up were soft hits and Ruben's error.
His biggest problem was that he couldn't put anyone away after getting ahead of them.
I never got worried about the last inning, it just made the game 15 minutes longer than needed is all.

He did labor a bit in the last inning...1st start of the year; it was freakin' cold; he's still basically a rookie; Mets don't have a good injury track record; and the game was pretty much out of reach...Normally I agree on this point, but tonight I wouldn't have sent him back out for the 8th inning...

2nd game of the season, cold weather, large lead, a near-rookie who's never pitched more than 160 innings in a year, coming off an off-day with relievers who have yet to see action ... I had no problem with it.

for the starters too though. Gotta incrementally go longer in the games. I mean, we know they probably won't got much deeper into the game than that with Harvey but I don't think him, or Niese, should jump to 110+ until they've done 100 a couple of times.

as far as the "they can use the work" concept...2 blowouts situations; wouldn't have been a good time to let rookie Jeurys "break the ice" in 2013 and get a little Familia with the Citi Field mound in chilly conditions? Terry used 7 out of 8 relievers, using the guys that he'd want to use Thursday afternoon in a tight game but didn't get the rook in for some experience when the games weren't on the line...

This point wasn't lost on me. Hawkins looks like a lean young athlete fresh from school and he's 40 years old.

I think I got more wood from the Doodoo homer than from Harvey's performance, although both were woody.

Duda...he got great wood on that homer.

We're talking about batting, right?
