If the season ended right now, the Mets and Nats would play a tiebreaker for the right to play the second place team in the West for the Wild Card.

Re: Monday Night Baseball IGT: New York (N) @ Phila.

I'm cautiously pessimistic about tonight. I sorta feel like Halladay will pick us to get back to himself and that Harvey was spoilt by facing the meek Padres and while the Phillie lineup isn't murders row, it's a lot stronger then either of the two we've faced.

Peep his PitchFX numbers: Halladay's got something of the same issue as Johan faced-- diminished velocity, leading to too-small a velocity difference between FB and change. The control is just as good as ever, but he's significantly more hittable... at least until he learns how to permanently adjust.

Re: Monday Night Baseball IGT: New York (N) @ Phila.

I did hear Buster Olney and Curt Schilling talk about it (think it was that combo, on Baseball Tonight Podcast anyway) and how Roy Halladay was going to have to adjust to not being able to beat hitters in the zone anymore and that's an adjustment one can make but that if, for 6 years or whatever, you've been able to beat them in the zone it takes a while to figure that you can't go in there anymore and get away with it.
On the same podcast they were pointing out how the k's didn't necessarily mean anything more then that the braves hitters were trying to hit the yoke out of the park because it was feeling very hittable to them and braves hitters are going to strike out if they're going for it.
On the other hand, I will not accept that he's anything other then a dominant beast until long after tonight.

He'll adjust. He just has to find that proper differential between whats left of his heat and his off speed stuff. He'll find it. Probably tonight >< DOH!

St Looie's bullpen sure had a tough night tonight

Tied 4-4 at home in the 9th:
Boggs pitching:

- Votto intentionally walked
- Phillips doubles (1st run)
- Bruce intentially walked
- Fraizer walked (2nd run)
- Hannahan infield single (3rd run)
- Hanigan on via E-6 (4th run)
Rzepcinski in for Boggs
- Izturis single (5th run)
- Choo hits 3-run double (8 runs in)
- Heisey grounds out (2 down - both Heisey)
- Votto RBI single (9 runs)
- Phillips walks
- Bruce infield single (loads bases)

But seriously, this kid reminds me of Seaver in the way that he comports himself. Very businesslike and professional.

The key to assembling an effective bullpen is to go to it as sparingly as possible. Getting the last two innings out of one guy instead of four last night is a big step in that direction.

Other thing going wrong is that this team striking out too much.

I'm sold on Harvey...he looks great. Last night, I just kept thinking "Wheeler could be this good, too!" Oh, to dream.

Very jocky and douchey too. He's the kind of guy all the other teams are going to start hating and fearing very soon.

It's the aggressiveness I like. The absence of waste pitches almost seems like a different brand of baseball.

Yeah, Wheeler chills. And Snyderbuzz. Dark horse is Rafael Montero. Who knows what's gonna come from that guy? It's almost like Alderson wrote the rules to hide him on the shelf until the Mets could sign him.

But in the meantime, it's probably best to be thankful for the Harveymeat and not look ahead to dessert too much.

I don't think I care about the striking out (though Kirk and Ike need to actually hit the ball more). I love what Duda's been doing at the plate.

But love that they went two innings with Edgin, and love that he did well with it. Saving the other 6 guys an appearance is worth the 'overusing Edgin' complaints.

I don't care if he's jocky. I don't care if he's douchy. He doesn't need to be warm and cuddly.

If he delivers on the field as professionally as he has done so far, he can be as full of himself off the field as he wants.

Harvey's not gonna buy that be-a-good-citizen shit. As LWFS said The Smug runs strong with this one.

I imagine you're right, anymore than Gary Carter could make Dykstra not a cock. But seeing it play out will be an interesting side drama. I could see him getting hauled into Terry's office getting gentle talking-to's over outrageous infractions that the Mets are forced to downplay and pretend are smoothed over when they're not.

Re: Monday Night Baseball IGT: New York (N) @ Phila.

Honestly, the physical stuff is great... but the makeup's where Harvey shines. There's some Smug, to be sure. There's also just a pinch of Pugnacity (see: chin music to Howard and Utley to back them away from the plate, just before giving them fastballs to ground into the dirt), and a hell of a lot of Drive to back up the Smug-- he knows he's good, because he IS good, because he works like hell at it (and does so in a focused way, not just ITBSHOHL iron-pumping or tire-hammering). He may have bumps-- leadoff walks, e.g.-- but he seems to have the ability to correct them almost immediately.

It's a rare bird that has both the drive to get angry over minor mistakes AND the control to correct said mistakes without overcorrecting or losing it. If Wheeler doesn't have that, he's just a guy. If he has that AND his stuff, he's going to be disgustingly good, too, and your friends who root for other teams will silently envy/resent you for the next decade or so.

Definitely comes across jocky. Don't see the douchy yet.

In any case, if he ends up as good as Seaver (or anything close) let's agree he can be as douchy as he wants. We'll just know ahead of time not to put him in the booth.

I am starting to discover how meatheady I am. I am so much more pumped for Harvey blowing hitters away than I was for RA delicately dominating last year.

Francessa *likes* Wright but thinks he *discovered* Harvey. He's totally going to spoil our return to greatness by making it all about how Matt Harvey came along, stepped out of his Cadillac, and stopped being such a Met with Mike's encouragement.

So long as he's our douche, so long as he comports himself professionally, and so long as he doesn't do or say anything outrageous or racist or otherwise objectionable, I for one plan on enjoying watching this kid pitch for us.

And God forbid but he is also a Pats fan, much to the chagrin of numbnut Mets fan who think he should be a Jets fans because he now plays for the Mets.

Twitter can be hilarious and such was the case when Harvey got called up last year and of course garnered more attention...he tweeted his love for the Pats during one of the of games.....this of course set some Mets fan alight and moved Harvey to defend his love of the Pats....

Re: Monday Night Baseball IGT: New York (N) @ Phila.

Keith Law offers an evaluation that is very encouraging to my eyes:

Harvey has room to improve

Matt Harvey faced off against a desiccated facsimile of Roy Halladay -- the less said about him, the better -- on Monday night and put up an outstanding stat line, showing great stuff but struggling a lot with location, control and even consistency on his curve and slider.

The good stuff first: That's ace stuff, a fastball mostly 93-97, a filthy slider at 87-91, a hard curveball at 78-83 and a riding change at 85-88. He punched out Ryan Howard by going up and in with heat three times in four pitches; Howard eventually caved and chased a pitch he couldn't sniff. Laynce Nix, not really a major league hitter anyway, couldn't touch Harvey's fastball and swung through three of them in his last at-bat, the final one perfectly placed up out of his reach but close enough to induce him to flail at it.

Harvey threw some sliders that were unhittable, right off the outside corner to right-handed hitters, victimizing Michael Young more than once that way. The slider he threw to strike out Young in the fourth, 90 mph on the TV gun, broke down over the outside corner of the plate and made Young look feeble. He could have used the changeup more, preferring to go in with the curveball to left-handed hitters, even though his changeup is an above-average (or better) pitch.

Philly's lineup just isn't very good anymore, which helped Harvey get away with a lot of pitches where he either didn't locate or didn't finish a breaking ball (mostly the curve). The sac fly Howard hit in the fourth came off a bad changeup that a decent left-handed hitter would have destroyed. Harvey hung several sliders and curveballs, including ones that Humberto Quintero and Young failed to capitalize on, with the curve the bigger problem on Monday.

Harvey also missed up in or above the zone way too often for my tastes. He did blow it by a number of hitters, which is great when the location is planned, but when you miss, it's much better to miss down in the zone than it is to miss up. Quintero also got a fastball up in the first pitch of his second at-bat that might as well have been on a tee, a mistake Harvey will pay for if he does it against better hitters.

He didn't get a ton of help from his defense. Ike Davis was an adventure at first base all night, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis struggled picking up some balls in center. It also seemed like John Buck struggled to catch Harvey's better velocity, jerking some borderline pitches away from the zone.

Overall, I'm still as bullish on Harvey as I was when I scouted his major league debut in July, but there is a gap between that ace potential and what he showed Monday night in both command and in consistency on the two breaking balls.
