National League Player of the Week: Douchey Matt Harvey.

First Mets winner since back to back last spring when R.A. Dickey won May 21-27 and N.H. Santana followed him up May 28-June 3.

Re: PotW

I just posted some NL POTW trivia to the UMDB Facebook page:

Matt Harvey was named the National League Player of the Week for the week ending April 14. This was the 79th time that a Mets player has won this honor. 47 different Mets players over the years have been named Player of the Week. The most frequent winner was Dwight Gooden, with 5. Darryl Strawberry and Tom Seaver were named Player of the Week 4 times. Three-time winners are Dave Kingman, Jesse Orosco, Keith Hernandez, John Olerud, Mike Piazza, Carlos Beltran, and David Wright. Not all winners have been legendary Mets; among the Players of the Week are players like Mike Phillips, Frank Taveras, Octavio Dotel, Dave Mlicki.

Just scanning down the list of winners, I notice that the biggest gap between Mets POTWs is from August 17, 2008
(Johan Santana) to September 4, 2011 (David Wright).

Another stretch that was nearly as long ran from July 31, 1977 (Steve Henderson) to May 25, 1980 (Frank Taveras). The Mets have had a few winning seasons without a win, including 1987 and 2001.

Re: PotW

When does the PotW go back to?

It seems there are periods of recent baseball history where Player otW and Pitcher otW are distinct and therefore pitchers ineligible or only nominally eligible, and periods when there is only one award, or there are two but pitchers are liberally considered for the former.

Re: PotW

Well, it looks like it goes back at least as far as 1973. I did a little Googling but couldn't find anything that indicates when the award was established. Was there ever a "Pitcher of the Week" award? That does sound vaguely familiar.

National League Pitcher of the Month: Douchey Matt Harvey.

First Mets winner since Dickey in June 2012. Not a long drought compared to, say the near seven-year run from June 2000-April 2007.

Fourteen Mets pitchers have won the award previously, a total of 20 times.

Re: PotW

Not only is Jordany Valdespin the Pacific Coast Leaguer otW, but the Eastern League Pitcher otW is (dramatic pause...) NOAH SYnDERGAARD!!!

Snydergard proved that he's more than a double-A pitcher with double-A's in his name, going 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, in two starts, totalling a kid-glovesey 11 innings, allowing only 5 hits, 3 earned runs, and 1 walk against 15 strikeouts. Scary.

Dustin Lawley, First-Ever St. Lucie Florida State League PotY

PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA- The Florida State League has announced that Dustin Lawley has been named the league’s Player of the Year.

The Florida State League Post-Season All-Star team was selected by Field Managers, Official Scorers, and club Sports Writers representing the 12 teams in the league.

Lawley is hitting .259 with 25 home runs and 90 RBIs through 117 games played. Lawley has 61 extra-base hits, including 31 doubles and has a .514 slugging percentage as well as 232 total bases.

Lawley leads the league in home runs, RBIs, extra-base hits, total bases, and also ranks second in the league in slugging percentage and is tied for third in doubles.

The 24-year-old was named a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star and participated in the Home Run Derby.

Lawley was selected as the left fielder for the Florida State League Post-Season All-Star Team.

Lawley, a native of Adger, Alabama, is four home runs and four RBIs shy of tying the single-season mark in St. Lucie Mets club history.

T.J. Rivera was selected to the Post-Season All-Star team as a utility infielder. Rivera leads the Florida State League with 137 hits. He has a .296 average, 1 home run, and 43 RBIs. Rivera ranks fifth in the league in average and is tied for the second with 68 runs scored.

Matt Bowman, in his first professional season, was named one of four starting pitchers to the All-Star team.

Bowman is 6-4 with a 3.18 ERA through 16 starts. In 96 1/3 innings, he has struck out 90 while walking 31 and has allowed 83 hits and 36 runs (34 earned). Bowman ranks sixth in the league in ERA and is fourth with a 1.18 WHIP. He also ranks third with a .232 opponents’ batting average against. Bowman is third in the league with the fewest baserunners allowed per nine innings.

St. Lucie Mets manager Ryan Ellis was named as one of the three coaches selected to the post-season All-Star Team.

Ellis, who was recognized as the Florida State League Manager of the Year in 2012, has guided the Mets currently to a 66-54 record, which is the third best record in the league. The Mets won 37 games in the first half under Ellis and finished in second place in the Florida State League South Division

Re: PotW

Maybe, but the team had plenty of players of comparable age.

So indeed, did the Clearwater Threshers, for comparison.

Obviously, candidates for any minor league's Player of the Year are going to be players who stay back and achieve a full season's worth of productivity while others gain promotions. That can be (a) because they're not playing quite that well, and consistently play well enough to compile stats toward a good year while others play just a little better and move ahead, or (b) their team thinks their performances have been fool's gold, and aren't yet believers that it can translate to a higher league, or (c) the team considers themselves well set at the player's position in the leagues ahead of the player's league.

So maybe Lawley's nothing more than a non-prospect beating up on the little kids on his block, but if so, he's the first Mets non-prospect ever to win the Florida State League Player of the Year. I wouldn't throw that away.

Re: PotW

He prolly whiffs a little much to be considered an actual prospect, not to take anything away from his FSL hardware and the chance to do the same at Bingo next year.

Re: PotW

yeah, good for him and all, but a 24-year old playing in the FSL seems like a man against boys, and a .259 BA describes a guy who isn't going to make quite enough contact to put up those power numbers at higher levels. But we'll see, i guess, and good luck to him.

Allan Dykstra and closer Jeff Walters of Binghamton are awarded with Eastern League full-season All Star status. I'd be surprised if Dykstra doesn't get a PotY honor as well.

Dyksta wins Bingo PotY before the game, hits the go-ahead homer during the game, and wins Eastern League PotY after the game. This is a good day.

There's a clip in that article also noting that Bingo manager Pedro Lopez has been named the Eastern League MotY.

Juan Lagares, meanwhile wins ESPN's Defensive Player of the Month. Raise your hand if you know there was a DPotM award, ESPN or otherwise.

Re: PotW

In post-season honors, the 2103 Appalachian League Top Prospect, according to Baseball America, is shortstop Amed Rosario of your Kingsport Mets.

Rosario, just 17, hit .241 / .279 / .358 // .637 in his first stateside action, so obviously the honor is based on potential as much as anything.

Jim Malone, MLB's Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year, per Rubin. As one person put it in response, sure, give it to the guy from the team where everybody gets hurt and nobody hits home runs.

Re: PotW

Malone's prize is the 2012 (that's what it says) Nolan Ryan Award for "outstanding Strength and Conditioning Coach in professional baseball," voted on by his peers. The award "also recognizes the recipient's personal accomplishments and integrity as a Strength and Conditioning Coach," according to the Mets, who note Malone "worked with the Padres in 2012," in case you're wondering why a Mets coach charged with strength and conditioning would receive something like this.
