Australian Rules Football 2013 Premiership Thread

The AFL 2013 season has just begun and my Brisbane Lions got their doors blown off in round 1, losing to the Western Bulldogs 19.13.127 to 7.17.59, standing at 17th on the ladder thanks to their 46.5 percentage. The Lions haven't been to the finals since their great four year run that featured championships in 2001-2003 and a finals loss in 2004.

I don't get to watch much footie, but Fox Soccer Plus shows some games and a weekly highlight show that I try to catch. It's too much to follow the individual players, but I love to watch the game. I started watching in the late 90s and picked Brisbane as my team because they were good, and had a player named Jason Akermanis who was probably the most easily identifiable player on the field.

I doubt this thread will get much play, but if you stumble across the game and have never seen it, take five minutes to check it out. It's pretty easy to get hooked.

I'm glad you started this thread before I was able to figure out what the hell you are talking about.

You’re the first Brisbane Lions fans I know. Mazel tov!

I’m only a fair weather fan I’m afraid. I support the Carlton Blues (a Melbourne team). I think metirish is a Swans fan and Frayed Knot is a follower of undisclosed allegiance. However, when considering your allegiances, please note Collingwood Magpies = New York Yankees.

The way it works here is if from NSW/Queensland/ACT you follow Rugby League/Union first. Within Sydney, it’s League = working class, Aussie Rules = middle class, Union = rich twat and noveau-riche wannabe class.

Btw, my place is approx. the same distance from the Sydney Swans home ground, as Bobby V’s (ex-)joint is from Citi Field.

Can I just clarify that this team is in no way, shape or form affiliated with my Bulldogs, the Canterbury Bulldogs of the NRL.

No, no, no, you've just confused them further. That photo belongs in the NRL Thread which doesn't exist.
So one more time:
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs -- Rugby League team from Sydney
Western Bulldogs = Aussie Rules team from Melbourne.

Carlton blow a 10 point lead at 3/4 time, to lose by 17 to the Magpies in torrential rain. Results of this kind have put me off Aussie Rules in the last 5 years.
