Earned some awards!

I don't know if I've talked my new role at work at all, but in October I was promoted from statewide education reporter to the community engagement specialist in our Grand Rapids Hub. In the print-centric days, the position would be called "editorial page editor" or "opinion editor." I write editorials, help set institutional opinion, invite community opinion and generally find ways to make people become more engaged with the website, and, by extension, the print product. Last week the Associated Press announced its finalists for the 2012 awards. One of my editorials and one of my columns are finalists. I'm assured of at least third place, but will find out if I get first or second in June. It's kind of a big deal. We're in the category with the much-larger Detroit papers, who usually dominate these things. I'm excited to sneak into the awards with just two-and-a-half months in the new role!

Thanks, guys! You'd like the editorial. It was called "Michigan is not Wisconsin" and urged the governor not to pursue right to work laws. He didn't listen.

That should win a geography award, too! Congratulations on your recognition. We always recognized you as something special, and the word is spreading.
