Skyrockets in Flight!! - Mets @ Rockies IGT for 4/18/13

It's an Afternoon Delight!! ... weather permitting of course. Current temp in Denver, Colorado is 18 degrees - which is one of several reasons why they don't play baseball games at 7 AM (local time) By 1st pitch time the temperature is expected to be around 30 with a mere 12 mph breeze (so it'll feel more like 20) and it could even break the freezing mark before the game is over. More importantly, the day should be at least partly sunny with no precip expected, frozen or otherwise. So it sounds like we may actually have our second day of NYM baseball since Saturday - however unpleasant it may be for players and fans alike. And if and when it does come off you can meet me at the Jon - as the Mets are taking advantage of the rain-out to skip Hefner and go with Jon Niese to face Jon Garland

The Starland vocal band were made up of John Denver's collaborators. And I've long suspected that, had it been associated with the genial and engaging Denver, and not with the largely faceless SVB, it might have been remembered not as the embarrassing pop country drech it's treated like, but perhaps more like a goofy and fun lark, as "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" is. I'm not sure if the Anchorman and Good Will Hunting appearances were a step in that direction (irony is so confusing), but they probably made the SVBs a lot of extra $$.

Byrd played some CF in Spring Training, not sure how much, so at least Terry and the coaches have some sense of how he looks out there.

Murphy and Wright combine for the first run of the game. Murphy grabbing second on the wild pitch and then 3rd on the bad throw is big. Wright fights off a good pitch for a single to drive him home. 1-0 us.

I'm listening on SiriusXM online - the top of the third is just starting on my audio, but GameDay reports that two batters have already come up. This must be a full three or four minutes delayed. In reality they are probably in the seventh inning.

It struck me that Tuesday's doubleheader must've been like old-timey baseball --- with volatile defense and the pitcher highly disadvantaged relative to the batter.

Oh yes! Muffy with the mad dash home ties the game, aggressive base running. Wright hangs himself out to dry. He didn't have to draw that throw.

Nice RBI single from Ike. Need alot more tho. Personally, I think Ike being so spread is not a good thing. I know he and the coaches feel different but he's not a small guy. He has to hold that stance and balance and step and swing and... I think he should stand up more straight and then stride into the pitch, and end up spread like that.

OK, hardly an afternoon delight and the only skyrockets in flight turned out to be those off of Colorado Rockies bats. I am hereby suspending myself from starting IGTs for a minimum of one month on account of the shitty job I did here today.

Well, it wasn't a year last year, but two months. Funny thing is when he hit his stride after three, the rest of the team fell apart. I'm going to try not to draw overbroad conclusions over baseball played under such un-basebally conditions. It's really bad just for what it is. But obviously it's worth it to get an answer that helps get him right. What's really noticeable is the bullpen problems. I think this year is a lot like 2005, where they broke camp with a buncha vets in the pen --- Manny Aybar, Mike DeJean, and Felix Heredia, and such --- and it was up to a bunch of talented but fringey younger pitchers to take those jobs away on merit. I think that's the onus on Familia and Carson and Germen and Mejia and maybe McHugh. That's possibly a key to this season and maybe next. What's up with Mejia, anytutz? Shouldn't he be back on the field in a week or two?

FWIW, both Frank-Frank and Perpetual Pedro have started doing rehab assignments this week. Yeah, I know, not exactly a youth movement.
