Great analysis of Davis's swing problems by Mex. He should do more of those breakdowns like that. Some people do those and youre all, yea, whatever. But Keith makes all great points. When he does it I listen.

Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish

Marlns broadcaster on Harvey:

"I've been doing some reading and a lot of scouts describe his slider as Carlton-esque."

I'm saying boo... but who compares a righthander to a lefthander, especially with regard to breaking pitches?

"I've been talking to the Mets management about Harvey and what they speak about isn't what kind of pitcher he is, but what kind of person he is. Hard worker. Great teammate... ."

Wow! Nobody used the word "douchey"?

Seriously, though, he's struck out three of the last four and almost looks bored out there.

Harvey not on his game so far tonight, but still holds em scoreless. I want to enjoy these types of games as much as when he's on, so get to scoring Mets.

He looks distracted or something tonight. Not as intense.

When even douchey jockos like Nick Swisher are putting support out there, maybe things really are changing.

And on another note, I'm doing a bit of research for the Braves KTE and I see that the Mets only have three sacrifice bunts this year. No other NL team has less than six, and four have fifteen or more. Oh, and the Braves have yet to hit a triple. Amazing.

It's not that I think Keith would be a neanderthal on this issue in general, but he does tend to get a bit traditional about the whole sanctity of the clubhouse thing (remember his remarks about SD's female assistant trainer?) and I'm thinking that maybe his silence as Gary & Kevin did much of the talking said as much as he might have himself.

Yeah, except that Cichek is a particularly nasty ROOGY who has trouble with leftys and it's at least arguable to bunt Redhead setting things up for the LHBs behind him.
Like I said, though, the flaw in that thinking is that Terry might have done it anyway.

In the meantime, one of the problems with Baxter is that he's been slotted in RF where he's got a well below average arm.

You know, if this game was in important one, like on the last day of the season for all the marbles, it would go down as a classic. Clutch pitching, a late run to tie it, suspense all the way through. So why does it seem like one of the most depressing games I've ever seen? This is just painful. At least Gary and Keith are having a good time.

Mainly because this game has been played at a snail's pace since the top of the 1st.

You know, if this game was in important one, like on the last day of the season for all the marbles, it would go down as a classic. At least Gary and Keith are having a good time.

Cuz we don't wanna be losing Harvey wins. I think that's why I'm the most pissed. And Parnell has been looking like he might be ready for the closer job and him not holding it is very, very worrisome. It was a perfect chance for him to up his confidence and take the part.

I felt like, for a guy who missed almost all of spring training, his start was going to be unsustainable.

But mostly, I blame the current offensive drought on Davis. Once they had to move him in the lineup it sort of acknowledged there was a sick patient among them and the disease just spread.

They really should have intentionally walked Dobbs, Ruggiano, and Brantley there. Maybe Green too.

Following on CBSsportsline. Reading this game is as painful as watching it.

Missed this game last night, and I'm glad I did. However...

Watched the game.

Couldn't wind down afterwards.

Clock hit 2:40 before I started winking out.

Have been thus far useless to my organization since 9:00.

That's reason enough to keep Cowgill out of center. That was the sort of depth perception misread off the bat that folks unfamiliar with centerfield make. If you think about it, the idea that a misread and twisted route doesn't count as an error in the outfield is silly. A ball has to go off or through an infielder for him to be credited with an error, but since an outfielder is further away with more ground to cover, the scale of "should have had it" should be significantly larger.

So congratulations to Juan Lagares. I elevate thee.

I told you guys about this yesterday! I didn't think Cowguts was especially quick to the ball at the critical moments in Sunday's giveaway either.

Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish

Just saw the highlights of the extra innings, Baxter should have got Dobbs at the plate for the tying run? Perhaps I should say a better arm gets not fleet of foot Dobbs at the plate?

Yeah, Baxter can only be the best at what he is, and the throw it would have taken just isn't in his arsenal.

The sad part is that it was a pretty impressive defensive game for the team. Even Duda was crackerjack.

Even on a miscue, like when Turner threw to second on a bunt when neither Tejada nor Murphy were in position to take the force, Tejada kept his head and made the tag. I guess I also take issue with Juan F. Pierre running at will like he's Ron LeFlore or something.

Can Baxter not be decent defensively? Does he have no arm? These aren't things I'm sure of. I am sure he fielded that fly ball poorly to make a throw. It wasn't that he didn't have the arm to do it, it's that he wasn't positioned to put his body behind it.

There were a couple of other iffy postioning/awareness things later on, and I know Keith was getting exasperated with the defense on both sides. Marlins SS make a pretty pathetic attempt to get Murphy's slow roller through the left side.

He doesn't have no arm, but experience tells me that Baxter at his best reaches about average with his arm. Better than Duda, but I can't give it much more props than that. Not as good as Byrd, from what I've seen, but he may have fewer moving parts.

I have no qualms with his glove.

It definitely wasn't. he caught it flat footed and took a step back to get to that spot, but he had take to take a couple more back and get ready to go forward, even just a step as he caught it might have been enough to get the ball to the plate on a hop at worst, hell, the 'edging back to throw' motion before the catch might have had Dobbs decide not to go.

'Average' is kind IMO, and when you put him in the subset of RFers it becomes well below that.
As a RFer he'd make a good LFer

Well, like I said, I'm talking about him at his best.

My greater notion is that the real sin was not that they played less-than-flawless defense (my pissness about Cowgill aside), but that they didn't hit more.

A team with a one-run lead should not be focused on protecting that lead with perfection, but on explanding on it with violent offensive mayhem.

Even if you are perfect one night, protecting a one-run lead for six innings, taking the resources of the whole team to play a brand of clean, polished, old-fashioned baseball that was never the standard anywhere ever, they'll come out of it too emotionally and physically drained to offer a similar effort the next day.

When every pitch has the outcome of the game on it for as much as ten innings at a time, who can grow and thrive in such a climate?

I noticed this, too.

The truly nettlesome thing was, he had time to circle and get in position behind it, pre-catch. Just... odd.

I turned it off after nine. I've seen this movie before, and it always ends unspeakably. Surprised only in that it took another six innings which must have been like watching a Shakespearean death scene.
