Great analysis of Davis's swing problems by Mex. He should do more of those breakdowns like that. Some people do those and youre all, yea, whatever. But Keith makes all great points. When he does it I listen.

Marlns broadcaster on Harvey:
I'm saying boo... but who compares a righthander to a lefthander, especially with regard to breaking pitches?
Wow! Nobody used the word "douchey"? Seriously, though, he's struck out three of the last four and almost looks bored out there.

Zvon Apr 29 2013 05:57 PM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
Harvey not on his game so far tonight, but still holds em scoreless. I want to enjoy these types of games as much as when he's on, so get to scoring Mets.

It's not that I think Keith would be a neanderthal on this issue in general, but he does tend to get a bit traditional about the whole sanctity of the clubhouse thing (remember his remarks about SD's female assistant trainer?) and I'm thinking that maybe his silence as Gary & Kevin did much of the talking said as much as he might have himself.

That's one of the problems with using multiple relievers to get yourself through a game; all of them have to be on that day or you're courting trouble.

Frayed Knot Apr 29 2013 08:53 PM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
I'd like to think that the Turner bunt was due to Cichek being so tough on RHBs but he may have done the same with any other pitcher out there too.

Yes, but Collins also pinch-hits Turner against ROOGYs.
|
Frayed Knot Apr 29 2013 09:00 PM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |

Yeah, except that Cichek is a particularly nasty ROOGY who has trouble with leftys and it's at least arguable to bunt Redhead setting things up for the LHBs behind him. Like I said, though, the flaw in that thinking is that Terry might have done it anyway. In the meantime, one of the problems with Baxter is that he's been slotted in RF where he's got a well below average arm.

dinosaur jesus Apr 29 2013 09:02 PM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
You know, if this game was in important one, like on the last day of the season for all the marbles, it would go down as a classic. Clutch pitching, a late run to tie it, suspense all the way through. So why does it seem like one of the most depressing games I've ever seen? This is just painful. At least Gary and Keith are having a good time.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 29 2013 09:04 PM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |

Mainly because this game has been played at a snail's pace since the top of the 1st. Top that off with the inept clutch hitting and it's not exactly going to go down as a classic.
|
Swan Swan H Apr 29 2013 09:05 PM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |

I felt like, for a guy who missed almost all of spring training, his start was going to be unsustainable. But mostly, I blame the current offensive drought on Davis. Once they had to move him in the lineup it sort of acknowledged there was a sick patient among them and the disease just spread.

To recap: we walked a guy after going up 1-2 with a guy on 2nd; then we pitched to a guy with 2nd and 3rd on 2-0 and 3-0 counts; then the other guys swung on the first "pitch to hit" with the bases loaded, after previously receiving 8 straight balls (4 intentional).

Just saw the highlights of the extra innings, Baxter should have got Dobbs at the plate for the tying run? Perhaps I should say a better arm gets not fleet of foot Dobbs at the plate?
|
Edgy MD Apr 30 2013 08:32 AM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
Yeah, Baxter can only be the best at what he is, and the throw it would have taken just isn't in his arsenal.
|
Ceetar Apr 30 2013 08:40 AM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
|
Can Baxter not be decent defensively? Does he have no arm? These aren't things I'm sure of. I am sure he fielded that fly ball poorly to make a throw. It wasn't that he didn't have the arm to do it, it's that he wasn't positioned to put his body behind it. There were a couple of other iffy postioning/awareness things later on, and I know Keith was getting exasperated with the defense on both sides. Marlins SS make a pretty pathetic attempt to get Murphy's slow roller through the left side.
|
metirish Apr 30 2013 08:44 AM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
Interesting take Ceetar, no excuse for poor fundies if that was the case.
|
Edgy MD Apr 30 2013 08:46 AM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
He doesn't have no arm, but experience tells me that Baxter at his best reaches about average with his arm. Better than Duda, but I can't give it much more props than that. Not as good as Byrd, from what I've seen, but he may have fewer moving parts.
|
Ceetar Apr 30 2013 09:05 AM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |
|
It definitely wasn't. he caught it flat footed and took a step back to get to that spot, but he had take to take a couple more back and get ready to go forward, even just a step as he caught it might have been enough to get the ball to the plate on a hop at worst, hell, the 'edging back to throw' motion before the catch might have had Dobbs decide not to go.

Edgy MD Apr 30 2013 10:27 AM Re: IGT 4/29/13 Mets at Fish |

Well, like I said, I'm talking about him at his best. My greater notion is that the real sin was not that they played less-than-flawless defense (my pissness about Cowgill aside), but that they didn't hit more. A team with a one-run lead should not be focused on protecting that lead with perfection, but on explanding on it with violent offensive mayhem. Even if you are perfect one night, protecting a one-run lead for six innings, taking the resources of the whole team to play a brand of clean, polished, old-fashioned baseball that was never the standard anywhere ever, they'll come out of it too emotionally and physically drained to offer a similar effort the next day. When every pitch has the outcome of the game on it for as much as ten innings at a time, who can grow and thrive in such a climate?
