The Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame announced five new inductees Wednesday, including former big leaguers Rusty Staub and Joe McEwing as well as longtime Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley.

New York Daily News baseball writer Bill Madden -- who won the J.G. Taylor Spink Award in 2010 -- and award-winning Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy also will be honored.

Induction ceremonies are May 7 at Foley's NY Pub & Restaurant in New York.

Staub, a six-time All-Star in his 23-year career, played for the Mets, Astros, Expos, Tigers and Rangers. The power-hitting first baseman and outfielder received Most Valuable Player Award votes in seven seasons, with his best ballot appearance being a fifth-place finish with the Tigers in 1978.

McEwing, currently the White Sox third-base coach, played nine years in the Majors, five of which came with the Mets from 2000-2004. He was a .251 career hitter and also played with the Cardinals, Royals and Astros.

How does Foley's get so much publicity for this dubious operation? (G-FaFiF eloquently labeled it "The Hall of the Available to Attend.")

I'm proud that Staub measures up to the Joe Flaherty standard.

Dan Shaughnessy should be in the Hall of Fame of Lazy, Turgid, Reactionary Writers.

Well, that thread title is something I never expected to see.
Thank goodness the post clarified it.
