People named after Presidents *

* or other famous folks for that matter seeing as how keeping it to just Presidents might be kind of limiting even if that's where I wanted to start.

This latest idea in time-wasting came to me the other day upon the discovery that Willie Howard Mays Sr, and by extension Willie Jr., was named for Prez William Howard Taft, and by the fact that the Mets tonight will face Dodger pitcher Theodore Roosevelt Lilly (the hurler's great-grandfather rode with Teddy R. up San Juan Hill or something of that nature).

also:
inventor George Washington Carver (or at least I'm assuming so)
singer Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (born in 1912, the year of - although months prior to - WW's election)

Anybody else got some that'll make some of us go; 'I didn't know that"?
I'm hoping for full names rather than the likes of Jackie Roosevelt Robinson but we'll see where this leads us.

I can remember Lindsey Nelson invariably referring to Cal McLish, who was a player from 1944-1964 and a coach from 1965-1966 and 1969-1982 by his full name, Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish.

That's certainly a goody. There's Washington Irving, born at the exact time when every other boy was being named Washington.

Fictionally, there's Benjamin Franklin Pierce.

George W. Bush was named after George H.W. Bush, among others.

These are the saddest of possible words:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double-
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."

Not to be confused with Benjamin Franklin Pierce.

To move this away from presidents and into just general famous people named for famous people territory;
Martin Luther King was named for his father, but both their names at birth were Michael King. When the elder King, also a preacher, attended a world Baptist convention in Germany in 1934* he became enamored with the life story of 16th century father of the Protestant movement, Martin Luther. He soon began calling himself Martin Luther King and also altered the name of his then five year old son.

* and what's the deal with a Baptist convention in Nazi-era Germany?
