SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHERS OF THE MONTH, APRIL 2013

The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for April 2013 is JOHN BUCK, winning his first Schaefer award in his first month as a Met. Buck, the first catcher ever to be named Player of the Month, led the Mets in April with 9 home runs and 25 runs batted in. He finished a mere 0.33 points ahead of second-place Matt Harvey. David Wright (19 RBI, 6 steals, .291/.415/.477) and Daniel Murphy (18 runs, .290/.327/.450) also finished strong in the voting.

The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for April is MATT HARVEY. Harvey, like Buck, is a first-time winner. He led the Mets in April with 4 wins (losing none), 40.1 innings, 46 strikeouts, and a 1.56 ERA. It was really no contest; he had almost twice as many Schaefer points as runner-up Jeremy Hefner.

And the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is yet another first-time winner, SCOTT RICE. Scott pitched in 15 games and had a 1.88 ERA in 14.1 innings.

The Schaefer Mets Bench Player of the Month for April is JORDANY VALDESPIN. Jordany earned 3.28 of his 8.46 Schaefer points in games in which he was not in the starting lineup, including the 1.91 points he earned on April 24, when he hit a gane-ending grand slam against Los Angeles. This is Valdepspin's second time as Bench Player of the Month. He also won in July of last year.

Re: SCHAEFER PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, APRIL 2013

Congratulations all.

I sometimes wonder about the perspective in those Shea background shots. Sometimes I look at that Buck picture (Buckshot?) and he looks like he could be standing on the mezzanine level. Other times, he looks like a terrifying giant standing somewhere between first and second.

Great work as always.

His problem is that his good outings have mostly come in more non-crucial situations while his bad ones have come during higher-leverage innings.

Re: SCHAEFER PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, APRIL 2013

Plus there's the problem we generally have for closerinos. Wins provide for so many points to go around that we don't have much left over for the guy who pitched the ninth, and are often, I imagine, reluctant to scale down.

Closers' big scores come in those extra-inning games where they might pitch the ninth and tenth. They walk off with no part in the decision, but find a lot of sudsy Schaefer at their locker afterwards.

Re: SCHAEFER PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, APRIL 2013

Yeah, I sometimes think we shortchange closers in this type of rating as fans in general tend to praise set-up men who pitch a clean inning but then dismiss a closer who does the same on the idea that 'it's what he's supposed to do'.
On the other hand, as I've incorporated these cumulative PotY votes into our individual ballots for our year-end rankings project, I've been on the lookout to see whether the PotG results show any kind of trend towards over or under crediting starters, relievers, subs, etc., but have yet to detect a pattern.

Asspats, Grimmy-- stupendous, as per usual.

Rice has a face for Hirschfeld if ever there was one, don't he?
