it does make me wonder: How often does yesterday's starter suit up for today's game? Is it a requirement? They just threw 120 pitches, no sane team would allow him to pitch in the next game, so what does it accomplish to require him to be there?
|
Ceetar May 07 2013 10:32 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |

yes, but he's the perfect extra pinch runner or pinch bunter. mostly just camaraderie and what not. it's his job, he's supposed to be there. Baseball players don't really get PTO days.

Swan Swan H May 07 2013 11:27 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
Yeah, the previous day's starter is usually there in sneakers and a warm-up top, spitting sunflower seeds and laughing at Duda trying to go back on a line drive.

The Mets have had plenty of flaws over the years...but they have had their share of pitchers that could hit almost as well as some of their 24th/25th players on the team (some from semi-recent history): Harvey; RA Dickey; Orlando Hernandez; Brian Bannister; Benson; Zambrano; Trachsel; Glavine; John Thomson; Pat Mahomes; In the case of Brian Bannister, there were days that I think that he would have been a better choice at 2nd base than at pitcher...

Edgy MD May 07 2013 11:50 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
I think of Brian as a pretty secondbasey name. But what do I get? Giles ... Bixler. Not much.

Glavine was not a good hitting pitcher, in fact he was one of the worst hitters in the league over the last 20-25 years or so to get a certain minimum amount of PA.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 07 2013 12:57 PM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
I found these pinch-hitting appearances by Mets pitchers. Those who did not make an out are in bold.

seawolf17 May 07 2013 01:20 PM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
Looked up why Roy Lee Jackson pinch-hit in the second inning in 1980; that was Craig Swan's last start before losing the rest of that season to a rotator-cuff injury. Jackson didn't then come in to pitch; Pete Falcone pitched the last seven innings and got the W.
|
Edgy MD May 07 2013 01:29 PM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
I (incredibly) remember that game well. Falcone was the Mets' best hitting pitcher by reputation (though Jackson was no slouch). Torre was specifically asked why Falcone wasn't his pinch-hitter and he said he said he thought about it, but Falcone wasn't done warming up.

LA Dodger Pitchers at bat to date this season: .157/.204/.255
- Suit up, as in in uniform? ... all the time; can't be in the dugout otherwise. Probably isn't wearing spikes and cups however. - A requirement? -- no, but almost no one would simply give the pitcher a day off to go shopping or whatever; bad for team unity and all that. There was the case of Roger Clemens late in his career getting entire road trips off if he wasn't scheduled to pitch, but he was already bad for team unity. - Non working starters used to chart the pitches although I don't think they do that anymore. Usually it was the next day hurler although some teams gave that job to the previous day's guy.

So Harvey has a bloody nose and its just pouring blood down into his mouth, which he spits out, and I don't know whats going on but he sure looks fuckin scary. He's pitching fine. Its like no one noticed.

I may or may not have single-serve spot-started-- or "streamed," as it were-- Mr. Santiago in an important pretend-baseball league, with plenty of money and pride attached. If I did, I'd be very comfortable with that decision.

Nah, that was kool. Okay, we still got a game to win here. I thought Rubin hesitated in mid air, and thats impossible. He seemed to slow down there and I think he had more time to set and throw. But thats a bang bang decision for him. He went with the showy-er move.

My memory is a little clouded...but if I remember correctly in the 1988 playoffs...Gregg Jefferies was lauded as some sort of infallible hit-machine that could even hit homeruns while swinging a bat underwater as a minor leaguer...and then in one of the few times that I can remember Davey Johnson stooping to sacrifice bunting, he had Jefferies trying to bunt in a situation that he probably never bunted in his life...and Jefferies looked more pathetic bunting at the ball than even Al Leiter ever looked with a bat (and Leiter was one of the most awkward hitters that I've ever seen in my life)...

from the naked eye looked like he did all he could. throw wasn't even bad, it just wasn't a plus-arm throw.
|
Edgy MD May 08 2013 06:02 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
I think infield instructors (specifically Metly ones) need to have a long and analytical talk about infielders jumping to throw after backhand plays. It's hard to see the general advantages relative to the alternatives.
|
metsmarathon May 08 2013 07:09 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
versus plant-and-throw, the jump throw looks to take an extra step longer, while making the throw itself longer, all while taking the fielder's momentum away from the throw, resulting in an expected lower throw velocity.
|

Thinking about this one this AM, and I'm guessing that the pitcher was under instructions to pitch around Baxter. If he walks, no biggie, as his run doesn't matter, and the team won't have burned a pitcher, and if he chases a pitcher or two and makes an out, bonus. The pitcher just left one a little up.
|
Edgy MD May 08 2013 07:29 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |

Well, talking speculatively, as kinematics/bio-mechanics is merely my hobby and not my profession, I think an advantage to the jump throw is that if the infielder plants his right/push-off leg, but fails to completely arrest his momentum, he has to turn his left/pointing leg toward the direction of his momentum to keep his body from collapsing. This necessitates yet another right/plant step in order to return to an executable throwing position. Jumping allows you to rotate your hips toward first, while your momentum is continuing to take you away toward the leftfield foul line, without having to negotiate that paradox on the ground until after your release. Acknowledging that, the disadvantages are obvious --- a lack of leg thrust and too much loft and air-resistance on your throw. But I know a still more excellent way, and that's the slide plant.

Frayed Knot May 08 2013 07:52 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
I think it's going to vary among infielders as to which is better.
|
Edgy MD May 08 2013 08:12 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
Yeah, certainly the strategy is dependent on what the particular players skillz are, but I think Tejada is more Ordσρez than Reyes, build-wise, and it would perhaps (and I'm just speculating), be a good thing for the team instructors to experiment with him on his technique there, before he habituates the Jeter imitation which may perhaps not be his best move. Or at least get his confidence behind whatever is his best move.
|
Ceetar May 08 2013 08:52 AM Re: IGT - 05/07 - White Sox(13-17) @ Mets (12-16) |
I think Reyes and Rey both make it. (I think it squirts through for a double on Jeter)
