Very righty heavy.

I get Terry's Turnerlove, even if mine is not quite that strong, but I just don't get batting him fifth.

He's been hitting. that's justification enough at this point, even if you're going to ignore his reverse splits.

So much for Terry saying (or at least implying) that Ike was going to get the starts against all these LHPs (3 of the next 4 games I believe) to see how he fared.

Re: Buccos at NY (N) igt 5/9/13

They could have gone all righthanded by putting Recker at first and Turner at second.

The Buccos, interestingly enough, end up quite the opposite, with an all-righthanded bench.

Another horrible call by an umpire. Nothing from Shorty and nothing from the writers on Twitter. It's like bad calls are an accepted part of the game and there's nothing that can be done.

That wasn't a horrendously bad call. And its possible Turner lost contact with the bag for a milisec (his first toe touch beat the tag, which was high). Not defending West. Just sayin.

Re: Buccos at NY (N) igt 5/9/13

No, it wasn't Angel Hernandez bad but it was wrong and Joe West is paid to get the call right. I'm sick of hearing about "the human element" and how it's "part of the game." If they don't do their job right, fire them. The Mets are bad enough on their own without Joe West and Tim McLelland hurting them.

My first memory of Mark Malancon was from back when he was a Yanqui farmhand and Suzyn Waldman was telling everyone how great he was going to be. She of course knew that because the Yanquis had told her so even though she was passing it off as if it was her independent opinion.
That was like 8 years and 4 organizations ago.

Duda, Lagares, Baxter, mix in Brown and Byrd as needed, dump Valdespin for Satin.

I'm in no hurry to dump Valdespin for Satin.

Yeah, crazy to dump Valdespin for Satin, we don;t need another RH hitter and besides Muffy looks like he could use a blow at 2B.

I don't like Jordany as an infielder and I don't like Turner as the 4-position backup either. Satin is hitting, but sure, grab a lefty.

Neither do I full-time, but no one is asking him to be full-time there.

As long as he's hitting .350 (.378 actually) I like my Turner anywhere I can get him. Five positions, btw, including LF the other night.

Brown was hitting when we called him up too, as was Lagares.

I imagine if Satin was bouncing around the diamond for the Mets, you wouldn't like him at any of those positions either.

My point is I'm tired of carrying extra bad outfielders and want a second backup infielder. I'd prefer a lefty and a MI, but we don't really have that.

And my point is that, as tired as you may be, Satin probably isn't much of an improvement on Valdespin as the second backup infielder, seeing as they've been burying him at first most of the last two years.

I'd add that's it's way too soon to dismiss Lagares and Brown as "bad outfielders" and Jordany for all his whackiness has a lot of ability, that's plain to see.

As I said above (I think), I'd be in favor of investing another 100 PAs in Lagares as the "regular" CF, with Jordany and Baxter getting occasional starts in CF and RF, respectively.

Brown is on the shakiest ground I'd say. He's got to prove he can hit and trump Byrd's "veteraness" to stick as anything more than a PH. He's also be wise to leave a first baseman's glove with his name on it somewhere where Terry can find it.

Valdespin has played nearly as many games at 2B as Satin during their minor league careers, with a significantly higher range factor. Valdy has also played over 140 games at SS, to 2 for Satin. And, he's a lefthanded hitter. Hey, I think I found your lefty MI.

Re: Buccos at NY (N) igt 5/9/13

That's fine, but you don't need both of them, and no matter if they're burying Satin or not, he's hit more than enough in AAA to be given a legitimate shot too( yes yes, he's 28 and no longer a prospect). Lagares has barely played there. But that's the OF thing.

I'm not sure Jordany has talent. He has athleticism, which isn't the same thing. It can certainly have value in places, and the high-power/low-success PH role isn't a horrible thing, but It's not worth that much either.

but even if you want to go by performance Baxter has enough time here to warrant more playing time, and he's been an above replacement level outfielder, which is apparently hard to come by on this team. You don't need Byrd, Brown, AND Lagares. Juan's probably the most 'prospect' of them, the fastest, and the best defender. Let Valdespin back him up in center. fine. But you don't need both Byrd and Brown then. Josh Satin bats righty, but if he's backing up Murphy and Ike that's fine. (except, like Turner he hits righties better.

Valdespin may have range, but he seems to be a poor defender. And both times they had the option they went with Turner over him anyway.

Re: Buccos at NY (N) igt 5/9/13

I agree with Johnny. Let Lagares play for a while. The Mets will have at least two outfield positions to fill for 2014, and we might as well use 2013 as a laboratory to figure out what the internal options are. Marlon Byrd isn't at all likely to be a starting outfielder on the next Mets contending team even if, as hoped, that happens as soon as next year.

Of course, the other factor here is that Terry probably feels that he needs to "win now" to keep his job so he may be more motivated to think short term in a season where the focus is probably better placed on the longer term. Is that a reason to either extend or fire Terry right now? I'm not sure, but maybe.

You really threw it all in there.

A more logically selected roster that features two backup infielders and better overall coverage and less redundancy in the outfield.

Baxter and Duda stay. Ditch someone else. You don't need four other guys, particularly 3 right-handed guys. I'd keep Juan and Andrew and Jordany, but no one has a strong case for deserving to stay.

Satin seems to be the only infielder in AAA hitting. Maybe you promote Flores, he's certainly got tools right?

Re: Buccos at NY (N) igt 5/9/13

Campbell is hitting.

They do have a second backup infielder. They just don't want to use him there unless they have to, but that's alright, because most of their infielders are getting it done, including the first backup infielder, and there's been work for him in the outfield and as a pinch-hitter, because, through no fault of his own, the team is weak there.

Valdespin playing the outfield is to his credit. You don't want him in the infield, but evidence suggests that, as untrustworthy as you find his glove, Satin is actually more limited --- in talent and versatility. So is Flores.

I think more logic is behind their roster than you're giving them credit for. They need more productivity from their outfield and they're trying different guys. That's logical.
