Marcum if you Got 'Em: Reds @ Mets 5/20/13

Reds are here.

Muffy stays in the leadoff slot, followed by Ankeil, Wright, Doodoo, Byrd, Davis, Buck, Tejada and Marcum. Vs. Cueto.

I'll be rockin it Budokan style.

I wonder if he's going to finally reveal that he and the other pitchers/hitters are not to blame for the Mets woes after Harvey pitches, but rather it's Harvey's fault...Harvey's brilliance makes the hitters complacent; and make the other pitchers look like they are throwing Batting Practice by comparison...Would the Mets be 0-9 on days that Hefner pitches if he followed Nelson Figueroa or Jason Marquis instead?

I think we would have had Votto at second (would have been damn close) even if Ike didn't stand there like a dolt, and that costs us a run.

Re: Marcum if you Got 'Em: Reds @ Mets 5/20/13

Mets have had too many of these innings where they make the opposing pitcher throw a ton of pitches and get guys all over the basepaths -- which is all well and good -- but then don't actually score any of said guys.
Hopefully it'll pay off eventually but it would be nice if it were to occasionally pay off at the time.

I'll give Murphy this much : he knows what he's gonna do with the ball if its hit to him. No hesitation on that bad throw to second, and it was the play to make. I didn't think he had time but replay shows Cueto wasn't going to slide and would have been out with a good throw. Even seeing that play I feel Murphy is progressing nicely at 2nd. There's no doubt he's working very hard at it.

He is definitely getting better, but he will probably always have to work harder than most to keep it up. He also lacks the natural timing good infielders have. Two plays showed that clearly tonight - the rushed play you are talking about, and the slow hopper where he nearly lost the runner earlier.

He deserves a ton of credit for the progress he has made, and I can't imagine that he won't work as hard as he has to.

Then again, when you see Brandon Phillips everybody else looks like the Tin Man before the oil can showed up.

First time at the park in a while for me.

Found myself realizing that I didn't know this team well enough when considering whether it would have been better to hit for Ankiel when he was up versus Marshall in the 7th, and have the righty (Lagares?) face the Reds' RHP, LeCure (who was warming in the 'pen at that point).

Interference call seemed bogus, but it was clear (even from the seats) that the plate ump was terrible.

This was still a fun game to attend - for a loss - but still, this is going to be a really long season.

fyi...apparently Byrd is to Cuerto as Joe McEwing was to Randy Johnson...

GOOD CALL: Terry Collins placed Marlon Byrd in the lineup to take advantage of his stellar career numbers against Johnny Cueto entering the game (6-for-11). Byrd made the manager look like a smart man when he crushed a three-run homer in the third inning to tie the game 3-3. Byrd also walked in his first at-bat against Cueto and is now 7-for-13 in his career against him.

One of the major reasons why it may be a long season: they can't hit in Citi Field...and they can't pitch outside of Citi Field...

Offense at home:
.213 batting average (MLB worst);
Pitching at home:
.245 batting average against (MLB middle of the pack);

Offense on the road:
.244 batting average (14th worst in the MLB);
Pitching on the road:
.283 batting average against (only MLB that is worse is the Astros at .285 in the AL);

Highest batting average of a starting Met at Citi Field:
David Wright: .254 average;
John Buck: .208 average;
Tejada: .203 average;
(the rest are either below .200 or they aren't starters);

Other than Parnell, Harvey, Rice and Burke; all of the rest of the Mets pitchers have allowed either a road BAA of at least .250 or at least a 1.40 WHIP...
the other starters on the road:
Hefner: .275 BAA; 1.41 WHIP; 6.55 ERA;
Niese: .297 BAA; 1.79 WHIP; 6.45 ERA;
Marcum: .313 BAA; 1.58 WHIP; 4.97 ERA;
Gee: .406 BAA; 2.35 WHIP; 9.97 ERA;
