If 2013 is fruitful, we will find a way to pay for the roster in 2018. If 2013 isn't fruitful, it won't matter how much money we save in 2018. It won't be enough. It's hard enough choosing between the needs of the team in the short term versus the needs of the player (and his ability to help the team) in the long term, when deciding whether to promote him. Adding this nebulous date that controls what he'll be paid years down the road --- IF he doesn't flame out or succumb to injury --- is folly. It over-complicates the decision, bringing in enough factors to paralyze you.

Okay, and conversely, willfully ignoring the Super Two/team-control thing is no-impulse-control, WFAN-dum-dum thinking at ITS worst (or can be, anyway), just as limited in scope. As for the down-the-road-never-coming thing, well... I mean, hell, a lot of things can happen-- why plan at all, if you're a GM? Empty your gun, Sandy-- WE'RE NOT GETTING YOUNGER, HARVERD! I'm not saying I disagree with you entirely, or that you're not entitled to rant. I just think there's a bunch of ways to look at it.

I just think, any day with a good player available to win games for you is a blessed day borrowed from eternity, and it may never be available to you again. Youth, athleticism, beauty. It's all so fleeting. I believe in the future and what it promises, but...

first off, not denying it's not the reason, but that Wheeler is staying down for solely super-2 reasons feels a little "they're so broke" conspiratorial. He also just missed a start prior to the last one with an issue serious enough to require going to get checked out. At this point another 2-3 starts isn't really making or breaking anything for the Mets season. No Mets pitcher is standing out as a beacon of "omg can't let this guy start anymore" Hefner has made some good ones. He could certainly compete for 2-3 more starts just fine. I personally couldn't care less about super-2, even early free agency. It's the Mets job to worry about that stuff and how to keep players around. I'd consider us lucky to get to the point where 4-5 years down the road we're fretting about that like he's going to be the most coveted free agent. But at this point, when it's just a couple of weeks in what's so far a very poor season, hell..save the couple of bucks.

Wheeler coming up tomorrow or in two months isn't going to change the trajectory of this season. Having an extra year before he hits free agency is much more valuable than a couple of weeks in 2013.

I agree that there are perfectly basebally reasons not to call up Wheeler. But I disagree that calling up Wheeler tomorrow vs. two months from now doesn't change the the trajectory of the season or have meaning. If he's ready, he's ready. If he can help, he can help. Though I'm certainly not suggesting that either of those notions is true. He'll be up soon enough, and I'm not lamenting the lack of a ballplayer I feel entitled to. I am, instead, lamenting the diminution of naturally evolving progressive competitive baseball. Pitches and swings should be deciding the course of the game and the season, not bureaucratic loopholes. Who ever gave a curtain call to a bureaucratic loophole?

The low curve against Ike with two strikes was as predictable as the sun going down. The strange part is that they put it as high as his ankles, when it's a safe and sure move to bounce it off the plate. 1-39

And this is how it's been going -- the one time Muffy makes an out is the one Ankiel finally gets on. Last game it was Ankiel on base all over the place w/XBHs and David couldn't get out of his own way.

Gattis looked for a bit like he was slowing down and coming back to earth ... but lately he's picked it back up again. Biggest crime in this inning was, as usual, the two walks. We've been killing ourselves with that type of inning lately.

This suspension and the network TV obligations poses another question with this game: Is it going to be televised? The whole SNY crew was scheduled to have the day off and it's tough to see them cranking everything up for what might be 20 minutes of air time, and FOX certainly isn't going to start two hours early and blow off whatever was on the docket for their affiliates.

If the Mets hadn't tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, would the Braves have had an eight-inning win? Or would they still have resumed the game today? I know that before the recent rule change, it would have been an eight-inning game either way, but now I'm not so sure. Do all suspended games get resumed, or just those that are tied?

What changed in the rule was that a tie game no longer simply gets wiped off the books entirely and gets replayed from scratch. Everything else, as far as I know, remains the same. So, yeah, had the Mets not scored after a complete 8th inning the Braves would have won an 8 inning game. But the 'whole 8th inning' thing comes into play because the Braves had scored twice in their half of the 8th. It used to be that they would have only counted completed innings meaning you'd revert to the game as it was at the end of the 7th which puts us right back into a tie situation. So if the game had been stopped while the Mets were batting but before they tied it ... then what? A - Do they suspend it as a tie and replay starting at the beginning of the 8th? B - Or do they suspend it and pick up exactly where they left off? C - and had the Braves led after 7 would they be declared the winner even if the game were called in mid-inning w/the Mets batting via the old revert to the last full inning logic? I think B is the right answer but I'm not entirely sure.

And now Lyon, or whoever gets the loss on his record is in need of psychological boost of his own. I'd be mad at Terry, but this is too much the mainstream perspective for me to hang it on him alone. I imagine four out of five managers would agree with him.

Ronnie indeed alluded to Davey doing that sort of thing, but as I recall, it generally wasn't when the pitcher in question was pitching very well (right up through his last inning of work) and his continued presence was a determining factor in maintaining a lead. Also, that was more of a raw rookie thing. By the second year, the training wheels were off the likes of Gooden, Darling and Fernandez. The Mets had games to win as much as they had pitchers to nurture. Somehow they managed to do both. All of it is different from "not gonna let him lose," which is a weird priority and defeatist thinking. What's wrong with showing faith in Hefner for another inning? "He's our guy, we trust him in that spot" is confidence-building. "We knew he'd blow it eventually" would seem to be the opposite.

I am very impressed that MLB.TV did make it so I could view the end of this game. But for tonights game, I'm all blocked out. This hasn't happened for a few years. They stopped blocking me due to location after I gave them my ZIP and said stop it. This is FOX showing Phils thats screwin me over tho, not MLB.TV. Pisses me off. Good luck Mets!
