Re: Pale Faces

Even on his Topps All-Rookie Team card, Tommie Agee looks like he's seen too much of life.

Was CleSox in a 1976 update set or something like that?

No. The Cleon card is a custom made job I found on the web. He appeared in only 12 games in '76, playing his last game ever on May 1, 1976, five months before the end of the season. So it was, understandably, unlikely that Topps would issue a 1976 card for Cleon, given their customs and practices. If I had my way, I'd issue a set that included every player on every team. If a player was traded four times in a season, I'd issue five cards of that player - one for each team.

Re: Pale Faces

The man who caught the final out of the 1969 World Series would eventually be run out of New York due to a clashing of personalities. While with the Mets, Cleon had a powerful arm and a hot bat.

The story is actually a bit juicier than that.

Cleon behave,
That's what the Chairman would be saying
And watch who you lay
He won't understand
And so we're

Holed up in the back of a van
Hidin' from the gaze of Donald Grant
Doesn't want me with a woman who's white
But then she puts her arms around me
And we tumble into bed
And then we say

I think we're alone now,
There doesn't seem to be any -- hey what's that sound?
I think it's Don Grant now,
He steps into the van -- oh no we've been found!

What have you done?
The Chairman wags his finger.
You'll pay for your fun
Now we know that you're a sinner

I'm standin' with my wife and Donald Grant
Apologizin' any way I can
Tryin' to make amends
Put all this right
But Grant puts his arm around me
And we go into his office
And then he says

I think you're all done now,
We no longer want to keep you around
So pack up your things now
Your glory days are past so get out of town.

I think it's Don Grant now
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now
Puritan exec kicking me when I'm down

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

Doin' it in the back of a van
Hidin' from the gaze of Donald Grant
Gettin' it on with a woman who's white
And then Grant sets his sight upon me
And he calls a press conference
And then I'm through

I think it's a shame now
Back in '69 I was toast of the town
But thanks to Don Grant now
I have a scarlet letter that ends my renown.

I think it's Don Grant now
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now
Would this have happened if my skin wasn't brown?

I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Would this have happened if my skin wasn't brown?

I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Would this have happened if my skin wasn't brown?

I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)...

Re: Pale Faces

I'd do that. I'd also go beyond to make sure the cards were printed in direct proportion to the number of days on the roster a particular player had.

One more custom job, also from the Cleon card site:
