And Derek Jeter should take all the at-bats. Leading off ... Derek Jeter. Batting second ... Derek Jeter .... etc.

Oh, what am I wasting my time for? Why don't they just move the whole game to the Bronx and let the Yankees show America how to host an ASG?

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

I'll put this in the same non-starter category that I put the campaign to award Derek Jeter an MVP that he didn't deserve as a career honor.

I mean, no misbegotten glory grab is beyond the reach of the Yankees, but getting excited about a campaign while it's still in the hands of a blogger may give it more of a profile than it deserves.

And "Billy Ball" was a term coined to reflect Billy Martin's management of the A's, not the Yankees.

he can start the game, but he has to throw his bullpen session from an electrified pool

Typical sour Mets fans, no class......

I can see it now......the whole ASG is going to be ruined by crap like this.....as mentioned above, just move it to the Bronx....

It's alright, because Rivera will do his best to get out of it anyway.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

Even worse than this campaign succeeding would be Georgia Roddy putting the Laynce Nix on it by saying, no, Mo's too valuable, we can't upset his routine.

I was noticing lately that my anti-MFY bile is at an all-time low, partly because I'm too disgusted by my own team, partly because there's something generically appealing about their castoffs coalescing into a contender. But bile returns with this nonsense.

Ptui!

even better when the regulars return and they choke it away.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

I was wondering how the Yanx could be succeeding despite the extended absence of Jeter but then I remembered: he's on the bench, so merely his proximity to the others makes them better players.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

I always love the "no finer gentleman in the game" claims. Why are these claims always made in reference to an All-Star?

Maybe the finest gentleman in the game is a backup shortstop on the Padres that you've never met and speaks little English. An assitant trainer who has actually taken decorum lessons. An umpire who has studied diplomacy.

I only wish Piazza were there to tell every hitter what pitch was coming, the way he did for Clemens in that all star game in Houston.

consider the source I guess.

I'm not sure who it was now ,but Howie and Josh were talking about a backup catcher recently, perhaps on the Pirates? who was the nicest guy you'll ever meet.

God bless Howie and Josh for putting the lie to my claim. Of course, if you listen to Vin Scully, there are fine men wherever you look.

You know who was a heckuva gentleman? Art Howe. No kidding. If you needed your unworldly baby sister to get home safely --- across town or across a thousand miles of lawless wasteland --- how many baseball figures would you trust her with more than you'd trust Art Howe?

I read an actual post from an actual person the other day non-ironically suggesting that Jeter start for the AL -- despite not playing a game all season -- for the same reasons. IT'S NOT YOUR FUCKING STADIUM ASSWADS.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. Magic Johnson precedent and such.

Fat, cowboy-hat wearing old hack Tracy Ringolsby actually wrote a column advocating as much.

Nah, different stuff. That was a post-announcement, post-retirement, 'lifetime achievement' award for Magic. And the NBA all-star game doesn't count, like the MLB one kinda does. Jeter can play if he ditches the boot and starts mashing like all the other washed-up old farts on the Yankees. Otherwise eff him.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

Oh, I agree wit' all that, but I think the Magic Johnson precedent will be cited, just cause it feeds the end they want.

Jeter should need a ticket to get in.

Does this mean that Jeter will finally cop to spreading STDs?

Oh my

Ian O'Connor you have been out Ian O'Connored by a stetson wearing fool

So Derek Jeter is on the disabled list.

So he had a setback and he's not expected to play before the All-Star break.

So what?

Jeter is an All-Star.

He has earned it with his play on the field throughout his career and with his actions off the field.

I remember Ringolsby being a big intangibles guy with his HoF vote, too, and doing some wacky stuff there... but outside of this, I can't find what my brain is (mis)remembering.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

I have say, I hate that one-sentence-paragraph trick that Ringolsby (and too many others in his profession) use.

On one hand, you get to project the notion that every pronouncement from your word processor is an unimpeachable truth from Mt. Sinai.

On the other, you are able to fill column space 2.35 times faster.

It also allows you to live in the thesis of each thought without supporting it with foundational facts.

As if each thought is self-evidently true because you typed it.

It's diminishing to the writer.

Even as it attempts to inflate the writer.

And it's certainly diminishing to the reader.

I hate it.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

the unfortunate thing is, there's not really all that much pressing competition in the al right now. jhonny peralta isn't really going to light up the ballot box, nor is elvis andrus or stephen drew. so a concerted mfy effort might actually get hte trick done.

i think i just threw up in my mouth a little just typing that.

The biggest insult in all of this is that someone in the MLB front office or in some network ivory tower actually thinks that we want to see Jeter. I hope he does make it, so that the fans can boo the living shit out of him every time he emerges from the dugout or his name is announced.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

After the crap he's pulled about begging out of it..last year? the year before? Why would anyone non-ironically campaign for him to be there? Either of them. Of all the players 'injured' they were the only ones who didn't show up.

Re: All Star Game--Rivera: You Knew This Was Coming

Exactly! [u:2it90dyi]UN[/u:2it90dyi]injured Yanx often don't show up to All-Star Games (or WBCs for that matter) and now we have to start making room for their injured ones on the idea that they somehow would have deserved it had they not been hurt.
No way Jose.
