Game of Thrones - Season 3 (Spoilers)

Anyone watching? I find this to be the slowest season so far. I think the plot has branched off into so many different story lines that it is hard to keep track of the intricacies of each situation. It is also hard to treat them with any substance when you are only giving them 5 minutes in any given week (and skipping some altogether in some episodes).

Completely bored with the Arya storyline. Not sure who these guys are, and don't feel compelled to get to know them in any way.

It takes me a few minutes to remember that Rob is in RiverRun. I've also lost track of what he is doing and what he is trying to accomplish. It was funny to hear him convey that same thought last episode.

I am psyched to see what they are doing with Danerys. I'm ready to see some dragons attack.

It's interesting that by the time they cut off Jamie Lannister's hand, they've humanized him to the point you are no longer happy it happens. I find myself having to remind myself he pushed Bran out the window. People who read the book told me to expect this sort of thing though. I thought this was well done. His explanation of his killing of Aerys was pretty cool.

Jon Snow's girlfriend annoys me.

I take it you haven't read the books. I think most of the plodding is because either a. it happened in the book (Arya) or b. so little happens when them that they don't have anything to do with those actors/actresses each week and end up in a holding pattern. (See Danerys. random 5 minutes "I need an army! Do these people listen to me!?!" each week. This season is the first half of book three and I think the next interesting thing to happen to her is in book 6. Couple of fun dragon bits maybe)

Agreed on the Jamie thing. All in all it seems they either kill someone off, or humanize/demonize them.

Arya's storyline gets interesting in my opinion, but not until after this season/book.

Jon Snow's girlfriend annoys him too I think.

I haven't read the books or watched the show, but how faithful is the show to the books? The main reason I haven't read the books is because they are freakin' tomes so I expect it would take ten seasons to cover one book if they didn't skip some details.

they're pretty close. They've seemingly cut out some of the other families (Dorne, etc.) but they were mostly boring anyway. There's actually a fair amount of plodding along though, and the stories aren't covered equally, which you notice in the show when they 'check in with Arya' and it's all "Wandering lost" episode after episode.

They're pretty close. They've basically done one book per season and they've done a very good job.

I gotta say though that I have a hard time remembering what should be coming up in future episodes because the order has gotten all jumbled around in my head. For instance I think I know what next week should be but I wouldn't be surprised if what I'm thinking turns out to be next year's season finale.

I've only read the first book, and that only last month, so I also had no idea it was coming. But I had a bad premonition all episode; that Lord Frey dude was too creepy. I had a feeling something was up.

My son has read the first three books, and he's been great and keeping his mouth shut about upcoming developments. He knew what was coming, and didn't even give a hint that anything big was going to happen this episode.

My wife and I caught up this spring (after I scoffed at the show a couple of years ago...I was wrong, though I still roll my eyes from time to time).

I haven't read the books, but had a feeling something was coming at the end of the last episode (Did Robb really think he didn't have something coming to him?). I laughed out loud.

My very pregnant wife was none too amused at the way Robb's wife bought it and told me she thought she was going to puke.

Reactions in my household were varied.

*wink*

It's strange...my wife won't watch ultra-violent movies or TV shows, but she's OK with GOT because of the fantastical features...I guess it makes it seem "less real" in her view. I've taken to catching up on Breaking Bad on my own, but I think there is another thread for that.

It's a great escape from the occasional cheesy sitcom or documentaries that we normally sit through together.

This ONION column is pretty funny. When i read it at first, i didn't realize it was THE ONION, and i thought it was serious. I mean, it's plausible enough. I know that i can't remember half the shit i've written in my life.

But this is the button: "All I know is Tyrion better not get killed, because if he dies I’m done with this show, man. Done."

Seriously.

I hope we catch up with Theon Greyjoy in the final episode. I'm curious to see how he's doing after his "non-elective surgery" a few weeks ago. Maybe we can all chip in and send him some flowers or something?

Theon seems to be one of the ones they're going a little off script with. If I recall from the books you don't find out he was alive/tortured until much later and then you don't realize it's him right away either. (or at least, I didn't)

Re: Game of Thrones - Season 3 (Spoilers)

Once they disposed of most of the Greyjoy/Iron Isles back story, they had to accelerate Theon's storyline or drop him altogether. I think it fits in fine here.

I was a little disappointed that Daenerys' war against Yunkai was almost entirely off-screen. It would have been cool to see an epic-scale battle, but i guess they cheaped out for budgetary reasons.

anti-climatic a bit. I don't know why they chose to segment it at that point (So they could do a cool Daenerys end scene?) rather then just after the Red Wedding.

Best part was Arya getting all stabby.

Re: Game of Thrones - Season 3 (Spoilers)

What I like is that even though it seems after the first three seasons that the good guys (the Starks) have been completely decimated and that the bad guys (Lannisters) are well-entrenched in the seats of power, its not necessarily the case. Only two Starks of consequence have been killed and Jon Snow, Bran, Rickon, Sansa and Arya are all still kicking. Meanwhile Joffrey, Cersei and Jaimie are all losing their grips on the power they had/have. Those that have read the books know what's to come for Tyrion and Tywin so I won't ruin that, but suffice to say that anything can still happen when it comes to which families are ultimately left standing.

And let's not forget, Stannis going to the wall to face 'the REAL danger', Danerys becoming stronger and stronger.

My personal highlights from the finale:

Ramsey Snow eating a sausage with dick-less Theon hanging behind him.

Lord Greyjoy refusing to rescue Theon because 'he's no longer a man'

Arya evolving into a ruthless killer.

A beaten & broken Jaimie Lannister returning to his sister's bedroom.

Its a great show and a fun saga to follow. In addition to that, the acting is just fabulous.

Charles Dance (Tywin) and Peter Dinklage's (Tyrion) abilities to portray the respect and utter hatred that the characters have for one another at the same time couldn't be done better than it is by these two actors. I love the scenes that they have together.

Everybody raves about Dinklage (and rightly so) but I think the kid that plays Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) has just mastered his role. The guy is just the portrait of a psychopath.

Re: Game of Thrones - Season 3 (Spoilers)

i agree about the Tywin/Tyrion scenes... outstanding. The love and hate froths over. When Tyrion dares him to name a single thing he did for the family rather than for himself, his father says (paraphrasing) I didn't drown you when you were born. Tough stuff.

I love that we are now seeing Arya, affected by the murderous, barbaric world she is growing up in and traumatized by her own father's execution, finally taking death to heart as her own personal god.

Yeah, Joffrey is a convincing sociopath ("kill any puppies today, your majesty?" asked Tyrion). But it's a lot easier to play the over-the-top characters than it is to convey the subtleties and ambivalence of characters like Tywin and Tyrion, and Cersei for that matter. Sir Davos, the "onion knight", is also terrific character and keeps getting better and more complex. Not to mention the Hound, lord Verys, Danaerys Targareon, Bronn the sellsword, Brienne of Tarth, Osha the wilding, Princess Margery Tyrell.

True Blood's one, unlike Game of Thrones, where they went way off script. Plays on some interesting ideas though, and the later books have been really good. The last one just came out, but I haven't read it yet.

Re: Game of Thrones - Season 3 (Spoilers)

The Theon torture scenes got to be a bit much for me... not solely out of squeamishness, but more because of its repetitive action. The story just stops dead as we watch him get brutalized for no apparent reason. But I liked the scene where his sister stands up to their father and gets a ship and crew of Iron born together to rescue her "little brother". Once again, its all about the family. A point emphasized earlier by Tywin to Tyrion. The family comes first. Cersei even fucks her family members. I wonder if she, as Tywin suggested, comes first?

But whatever else "GoT" is, its an epic saga about families, and how they can nurture themselves or destroy themselves. Some species eat their young and the folks of Westeros, it seems, are among them. And by extension, so are we.
