Oh, no. There's just nothing more to say. Speak the name and live the tale.

Seriously. The guy sits down with his McDonald's, and before he gets the ketchup packet open, he's closed three terrible decades-old kidnapping cases, reunited three families.

Charles Ramsey. Speak the name.

I am curious and also don't wanna know how they managed this for so long.

Here's my favorite quote:

"I barbecue with this dude," Ramsey said. "We eat ribs and what not, listen to salsa music, you see where I'm coming from? Not a clue that that girl was in that house, or anybody else was in there against their will."

Let's hope the blinding lights don't change him.

He's the greatest thing since the lady in Houston who got scared shitless by a hailstorm and called her mama.

Ok, now that I know who you're talking about (it takes time for me to get up to speed) I'd say that I hope with the reward money he gets to dine better than McDonald's going forward.

Re: Charles Ramsey

I must admit... I'm a little uneasy about this. It looks like we've got a hero and a half (although not nearly the hero that those three women seem to be). And we sure need a few to celebrate right now, and that's why I'm-a nominating him. But as an unsophisticated black man with an animated personality, he's going to be snickered at and memed to death and I fear more than a few lines will be crossed and feelings hurt.

How do you know that other lady isn't also a hero? Heroes come in all sizes and shapes and dialects.

Are We Laughing With Charles Ramsey?

But what feels like celebration can also carry with it the undertone of condescension. Amid the hood backdrop — the gnarled teeth, the dirty white tee, the slang, the shout-out to McDonald's — we miss the fact that Charles Ramsey is perfectly lucid and intelligent.

'notoriety' hangs out near the top of the list with 'irony' and 'literally' for the most mis-used words even in professionally written and/or spoken speech.

The "white girl" stuff at the end notwithstanding, I enjoyed the whole thing without reservation... for me, most of the fun was in his own astonishment at the details while telling the story ("I barbecued with the dude!").

Re: Charles Ramsey

"Notoriety" means being famous for something unfavorable. Is there an equivalent word for being famous for something good? One could just use the words "famous" or "notable" but they don't necessarily imply favorable.

I think "fame" does imply something good*; isn't its opposite "infamy"?

I should add 'infamous' to the list of mis-used words. Lots of journos (sports-TV types in particular) use infamous while trying to convey something positive.

Well, for example, Game 6 '86 World Series would be considered infamous for Red Sox fans and anyone that was rooting against the Mets that October.

Meanwhile, I'm not sure whether this is the right thread for this question, but can someone answer this for me?

There were three men living in that house, all of whom are currently adults over the age of 50. How come only one of them was charged with kidnapping? How can two other grown men be living in that house and not be complicit in the continuing kidnapping of these girls?

They were reportedly taken into custody because they were with him at the time of the arrest. I think the police have established they lived elsewhere.
