Ahh, I didn't know what that was. Figured it was some vegetable I had never heard of.

scouting potential gardening spots for future use, but don't have one yet. First thing on the agenda will be hops though.

How big is your plot?
One zucchini plant alone takes up a ton of room. Cukes too.

Re: What Are You Growing in 2013

Not huge, 12' x 12' ... I grow the creeping stuff vertically.
Keeps them off the dirt and they grow more uniformly too.
The lettuce is in a different area close to garden.

Re: What Are You Growing in 2013

Just cleared out our fenced-off front "yard" space with my upstairs neighbor... with just enough room for a couple of large window boxes.

Taking baby steps, since I've got something of a shit-brown thumb (and have killed more than one rubber-tree plant):

Basil
Cilantro
Mint
Parsley

Kale
Mesclun Greens
Boston Lettuce
Romaine

On deck, pending success: bell peppers; jalapenos; Rome, Cherry, and a couple of different types of heirloom tomatoes

Re: What Are You Growing in 2013

I don't know if it was sleet or hail, but really, what's the difference? Standing there, on Mother's Day, mid May, trying to spread new soil, and being pelted by ice. Sheesh.

Cripes.

Enough already.

Spring please. Summer.

Damn.

Gonna be potentially frosty here the next few late early
mornings. Spring can't fully sprung itself yet.

Re: What Are You Growing in 2013

Today, at 85 degrees, I finally decided it was safe to plant the veggies I started from seed for the Master Gardener plant sale, but they were not big enough so I still have them.

I planted
Bok Choy (gag)
about 40 tomatoe plants
Broccoli
Celantro
Eggplant
A pepper plant that I bought

I have Pea and Lima and Purple Carrot seeds that I will plant next week when I get home.

This week I started an herb garden (I've grown herbs for years but never in a dedicated garden)*
An odd plant garden (details to follow)*
Butterfly garden *
Shade garden
Tons of perrenials and annuals (some from seed)
Experimental/exotic garden*
Chocolate chip plant
Periwinkles to replace the ones our construction removed
Some roots my sister gave me that make bushes with really pretty red flowers

And also the Master Gardeners (excuse me I meant Penn State Coop Master Gardeners) apprentices and I are planning the garden for the Clinton County Community Center in Lock Haven which houses Head Start and one of the many Senior Citizens organizations. We are planning gardens for their playground/outdoor area (which is quite new and beautiful btw, except they planted their oak trees way to deeply and they are already dying but I digress).

KC, I am impressed by your garden and your comment that you stuck lettuce in a odd place in your yard encouraged me to put some of my many extra tomato plants beside my garage, which I have not used for gardening in many years.

By the way, for those of you who love to garden, your local University is always looking for Master Gardener applicants, and it is fun. :)

Re: What Are You Growing in 2013

Hahaha!

I planted the bok choy at my husband's request...must be a guy thing. I have only had it once and I wasn't overwhelmed. Maybe Mr Cooby will cook it better than the restaurant I ate it in.

Also, I want to add that early this spring I planted a memorial garden for my cat who died on Good Friday. I don't remember if I mentioned that here.
I think I'm about done, but we are going to Longwood Gardens this weekend and I usually come home inspired!

Anybody here go to Brooklyn Botanic Gardens? I think I remember Lunchbucket and metirish mentioning them...

Re: What Are You Growing in 2013

You guys should grow some chamomile.

After some qualified success with the first batch, we've added two more windowboxes, s'more spices (dill, marjoram, sage, thyme, rosemary, another basil), and some other stuff (jalapenos, arugula, chard, a mess of microgreens).

Bok Choy (gag) bolted early, did not get any
about 40 tomatoe plantsate my first little guys yesterday!
Broccolistill nothin'
Celantrogood lord does it stink. I pulled it out
Eggplantwhat was marked eggplant was really one eggplant and three peppers!
A pepper plant that I bought so actually, four peppers

I have Pea and Lima and Purple Carrot seeds that I will plant next week when I get home. I wonder where I went. Anyway the purple carrots weren't getting enough water at first but now they are growing. The peas and limas are doing terrrriffic!

This week I started an herb garden (I've grown herbs for years but never in a dedicated garden)*
An odd plant garden (details to follow)* Four o'clocks; something that came up in my flower bed and has turned out to be a dahlia (glad I saved it); a corkscrew grass plant; Indian paintbrush that I dug out of the yard; a black ornamental pepper;ptilotus 'Joey' ; chives; and some other stuff I haven't identified yet
Butterfly garden * This was just some sheets of paper with seeds embedded that I bought from people at work's schoolkids. They are gorgeous! Lots of zinnias and cosmos, mostly!
Shade garden Not exactly thriving as of yet
Tons of perrenials and annuals (some from seed)
Experimental/exotic garden* not sure what I meant by this, because I think that is what the odd plant garden is
Chocolate chip plant doing great!
Periwinkles to replace the ones our construction removed I gotta check and see if these are still there
Some roots my sister gave me that make bushes with really pretty red flowers These took forever to do anything, but they are going to town now

We have some wisterias we need to get planted so we are having a pergola built for them and next year I hope to put in a colonial style garden!

lol.

I planted some stuff in November in my trial garden; Joe Pye Weed and Butterfly weed and other late summer bloomers. Waiting to see if they come up in the spring after being in the cold all winter, then I'll move 'em out.
