MFY @ NYM, 5/27/13

I dunno what's wrong with me, but the dope's that there's still hope for this squad this year.

I'm thinking that Ike's single off Kimbrel the other night, followed by last night's sacking up, was a kind of spellbreaker that's began some gradual restoration not just of Ike, but the team he broke. Yes, these terrible starts and his overall unreliability have been too difficult a burden for the team to bear but they don't last forever. Wright despite decent numbers still has a lot of spectacular we've yet to see this year. I like Muffy at the top of the order. Doodoo is hitting everything hard and his BABIP is swinging back for the good finally.

For a team 12 games over .500, 5 games in front of the division, and on an 8-game winning streak, the Braves didn't much impress me much. Jesus, the Mets are about the worst team in the league and they nearly took 2 of 3. I'm not saying we're without deadly flaws. We're loaded with 'em. But we're not this bad.

And so it comes to these MFYs. Another team whose record far exceeds its ability and even more so than the Braves overdue for a punishing correction if only some team finds the determination to do it. I'm not saying the Mets ARE that team. But... They can be, goddamanit. It begins tonight. It continues tonight.

Re: MFY @ NYM, 5/27/13

If we're going to show them for what they are, it helps to do it at home.

Strikes me that Memorial Day games should be day games --- listening to Bob Murphy at the beach and whatnot. And all the pomp and forced patriotism feels like it plays into Yankee hands, somehow.

Anyhow, this one's on WPIX, rather than a national broadcaster, so that might reduce some of the ceremony. On the other hand, WPIX will never not feel like the home of the Yankees to me.

The MLB holiday treatment reeks of fakeyitis... and yes to day games....

why is Tejada batting leadoff vs a RHP that he's never seen before?

He's hitting .184 with a .457 OPS vs RHP this season...and over his career, he's been vulnerable for extended periods of times vs RHP (where's Mr Q to platoon with Tej?)...

Nice to get a win these days, against these guys, after leaving a bunch of runs on the table. (Also, and I can't believe I'm saying this... though not in any AB that ended up mattering, Hughes got squeezed a bit in those middle innings, as Culbreth's zone waxed and waned a little.)

But, yeah... first dinosaurs at the zoo (!), then platonic-ideal burgers and guacamole and adult-lemonades, then this on DVR-warp-speed; just one of those bee-yoots of a day, all-around.

Re: MFY @ NYM, 5/27/13

Granted. But, still, it just seems like a weird locution for a ballfield, and maybe-- especially taking the strangeness of it AND the potential for misunderstanding into account-- one of the least apt metaphors I've ever heard from a PBP dude.

If I'm being obtuse, I swear that's unintentional. Honestly, I've only ever heard it to describe beer bottles/cans, and I'm fairly sure I've never heard it on a sporting field of any kind.

I'm sure when it was brought to his attention that he used an old baseball phrase with such ill timing, he realized how this could be true and winced. But I think to portray it as anything more than what it was is going overboard. Stupid? No. In appropriate? If you want to make it so.

I heard it on broadcast and didn't make anything of it at all.

I'm just amazed that the Yanx agreed to participate in what was obviously an MLB-wide charity/marketing event for Memorial Day.
Usually they simply dismiss anything that wasn't their own idea, may seem to tarnish their beloved pinstripes, or that makes it seem like they're in cooperation with those other lesser clubs who aren't really in their league.
