tonight's game is the freebie of the day on mlb.tv

For those of you (like me) that don't get SNY and didn't see much of a point in paying for MLB Extra Innings Package or mlb.tv this season since you knew that the Mets weren't going to be too fun to watch...

mlb.tv has a free game of the day every day; it's almost never the Mets but today it is...

since the Mets are the road team (and it's the free version vs the Premium version), you'll probably be "stuck" with Gary Thorne as the play by play guy instead of the usual Gary (although, I might be in the minority that prefered when Gary Thorne did Mets games instead of the current Gary)...

Thorne is the Orioles guy. If you're getting the home team announcers via mlb.tv you'll be hearing the tones of Bob Carpenter and F.P. Santangelo.
Ask bmfc1 about those two; he's a BIG fan.

That's right FK... I'm such a fan of Carpenter and FP that for tonight's game, as I'm stuck with MASN, I will either watch with FAN on even though it won't sync with the TV or watch in silence. Either option is better than hearing those morons.

he did both radio (with Bob Murphy) until 1989 (replaced by Cohen) and then tv for the Mets (canned after 2002 for critical comments launched at Bobby "Teflon" Valentine):

Gary Thorne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1985, Thorne began a four-year stint as a radio announcer for the New York Mets. Thorne was present in the booth at Shea Stadium, along with Bob Murphy, for the now-famous sixth game of the 1986 World Series between the Mets and Boston Red Sox. Thorne was one of the first people to criticize the Red Sox for leaving ill-fated Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner out in the 10th inning over Dave Stapleton.

Thorne missed several Mets games in the 1988 season due to Devils playoff games. He was replaced after that Mets season by Gary Cohen. Thorne spent the following season with the Chicago White Sox.

Controversies
Bobby Valentine
In September 2002, Thorne reportedly talked of dissension in the Mets clubhouse between manager Bobby Valentine and the team's players. "There are a lot of guys down there (in the dugout) who don't like him," a New York Daily News columnist quotes Thorne as having said. "They don't like playing for him. And if there has ever been a Teflon manager, he's it. Nothing seems to stick. He's never responsible for anything."[2] Thorne and the Mets parted ways after the 2002 season.

is presenting the truth, really "stirring up shit"?

Mets fans tend to ignore Bobby V's faults, but he was a king size ass in Boston (and I remember him having just as many doghouses in NY, while making successes about him, and not taking credit for failures)...he's always come across as a "me, me, me" type of guy...

How could you possibly say a man who claims to have invented the wrap comes across as a me me me type?

With all due respect to you-- and Mr. Thorne, who was damn solid-- but you're absolutely nuckin' futs.

I like Cohen...he's a knowledgeable fan...but...he occasionally gets on my nerves when he waves the pom-poms too much or does the I'm smarter than you condescending POV...I used to think it was funny when Tom Seaver would join the booth as a visit, Seaver would chit-chat with Keith/Darling, but kind of would ignore Cohen as if Cohen was a starry eyed fan instead of a professional...

I liked Thorne , he and Seaver had good rapport....although towards the end Tom was phoning it in, perhaps Thorne was too. I think around that time he was calling ice hockey games on FOX and between him and Seaver some Mets games it sounded like they didn't know anything about the other team.

Loved Thorne calling NHL games.

Re: tonight's game is the freebie of the day on mlb.tv

My biggest complaint about Thorne--both in baseball & hockey--is that he called every goal/HR like it was the game seven WS/SC winner.
He knows both sports, has the right voice and a good cadence and all that, but going over the top for a 1st period goal in a January game leaves one little room to go up from there if and when you actually do get to call the Stanley Cup winner.
