Matt Harvey: twice the pitcher Alay Soler ever was.

The May 2013 Mets: Rick Ankiel was our eleventh-best player...and he wasn't even here the whole month!

Some of the pictures used in these glorious cards really driving home that Topps hardly ever used nighttime shots. Did they? The only Mets cards from the '70s that come to mind in that sense were the postseason cards from the '74 set.

Great job by Grimm!

Here's a Topps shot that never made it into the final set. It might be a night-time shot, -- it's dark enough -- though my guess is just inadequate artificial or camera lighting because if it were night-time, there'd be more people in the stands. The shot was taken during the visiting Expos portion of batting practice, and BP always occurred in daylight, even during a night game, even during an early season night game. Who's the player? The uniform provides a clue as to the era.

That's right. And Henderson the K, who never appeared on his own Topps Mets card, was on the Mets active roster for just a nick of time - less than a week of the '78 season.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, MAY 2013

After he and his brother Steve excelled in one of Ken's three or so games as a Met, Murph referred to them repeatedly as "the Henderson men". Then the Hendii went singular.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, MAY 2013

Opened the season penciled in as the everyday rightfielder. Wonder what happened? Trouble with Torre? Pissed that the team cut Bobby Valentine? Awkwardness of dressing next to a guy whose ancestors may have been owned by yours?

He didn't arrive on the team until March 15, to complete the mammoth blockbuster Milner/Montaņez/Devine/Boggs/Miller/PtBNL/Grieve/Blyleven/Oliver/Norman/Matlack deal (he the PtBNL). That he came so late may suggest the team was never so committed to him as all that. Texas grieved so much after losing Grieve they went and got him back to never ever let him go.

I'm Googling...

All I'm able to find out was that he was on the DL at the time of the trade after crashing into the fence and spraining a toe. Possible conclusions:

[list:2pgroulo][*:2pgroulo]The Mets thought him too soft.[/*:m:2pgroulo]
[*:2pgroulo]The Mets were growing deeply enamored of Elliott Maddox/Bruce Boisclair/Joel Youngblood while Henderson was healing.[/*:m:2pgroulo]
[*:2pgroulo]They really really thought they needed relief pitching, and Henderson was rather indistinguishable from their other options in right.[/*:m:2pgroulo][/list:u:2pgroulo]

The third looks most likely. Dale Murray, who they got for him, wasn't the most effective pitcher, but he was a horse.

Grimm should print his cards. For distribution.

I thought the Henderson v.K acquisition would be fruitful, though I preferred that Matlack stayed on. Henderson was a very solid if unspectacular outfielder and about as good as anybody the Mets had. Of course, those being the Mets, the de Roulet Mets, Henderson's career went into irreversible decline about as soon as the Mets got him.

I recently revisited some of the earlier cards. I had some 1971 and 1975 cards without the player signatures and I've fixed that. I'm planning to post them to the UMDB on a page where you could select by player or by year. That will involve me cataloging the cards, and I'll then find out if I have more than your count of 66.

I'll post the revised 1971 and 1975 cards in the "UMDB Stuff" thread.

K. Henderson's brief Met tenure revisited here. At one of our Amazin' Tuesday get-togethers in 2010, Marty Noble let it be known Ken wasn't the most diligent of rehabbers. Nobody asked. He volunteered it when the subject of Mets injuries came up.

I'd have to think you do. I have a special folder called Ben Grimms Cards, but sometimes I saved them to a different folder called Met Baseball Cards. I'll look in there and see how many I can recognize as yours. That folder has over 900 card images in it. Yikes.

Sometimes I wonder if collecting baseball cards is a colossal waste of good money. The answer turns on whether I could load all my Mets card images in my computer, and enjoy the images just the same. My '63 Topps Duke Snider, for example, has rounded corners, which annoy me to no end yet I know that at this stage in my life, I'm never going to plunk down about $100+ to get a NM copy of that card. I bring this up because a few months ago, I discovered that Topps, in one of its recent sets, reprinted that card just as it originally appeared 50 years ago, without any tell-tale indication on the front that the card is a reprint. So I bought that Snider reprint and stuck it in my folder of '63 Topps cards. And I'm fine. The faux Snier doesn't bother me at all.

1963 Topps Duke Snider - price (NM) $100.00+

2011 60 Years of Topps - '63 Duke Snider -- price 40 cents.

Damn. Bright side, I eventually will collect em all.

I found a few cards that could be yours in the other folder. With the Topps remakes and others who make card tributes like you once they get in that folder it gets confusing. The '70 Brian Stokes is yours, right? I also have folders for Met seasons, from 1962 to 2013, full of images from that year. I have found cards in those at times.

I have a '71 Santana with a card back. That yours?
Have you ever posted non-Met cards here?

I'd say the first few players put up respectable point totals, but mostly it was a pretty weak month, which isn't really at all surprising. Harvey nearly doubled up Jon Niese's point total.
