Can't go winless forever and ever, Shaun.

If the boys can shut the Braves down, a man like you can.

I'm pulling for him, but Marcum seems like quite the letdown after yesterday's hype.

Maybe, like getting Mike Torrez after Gooden and Darling in 1984 or maybe Bob Shaw after Seaver and Koosman, but sometimes vet guys find themselves too.

I'm counting on it, anyhow. The guy turned in one of the most remarkable relief outings in the team's history last week. Somebody's got to fill a hole until other rooks make their marks. Might as well be him.

Bob Shaw was a Met before Seaver (and thus, Koosman) and for a time, was the Mets best starting pitcher.

It was Shaw who taught Gaylord Perry how to throw the spitball.

Re: On Your Marc Get Set: A Call to Arms IGT, Pt. III: 6/19/

When I was a rookie, I was tutored in locker-room protocol by Mike Torrez and Rusty Staub, two generous guys who went out of their way to make me feel comfortable.

From Doc's first autobiography, Heat, in which he swore he was clean, a notion he's since refuted upon the publication of his second autobiography. Nothing in there about Dick Tidrow dousing him with ice water.

I haven't read Doc yet, so I don't know if he's changed his tune on any of this to "barbecue sauce, what do I look like -- an underage busboy?"

I've clearly conflated Bob Shaw with Seaver/Koosman-rookie-era relief filler Don Shaw.

I used to do that all the time, until I read Ryczek's book in 2010.

Re: On Your Marc Get Set: A Call to Arms IGT, Pt. III: 6/19/

Neither Murphy nor Wright gave Young much chance to steal. I guess that's a re-adjustment that needs to be made.

Marcum has a 5.43 ERA and a 3.05 FIP. That's a really large discrepancy. Hopefully that means he's due for some good luck.

The gray numbers and letters on the blue jersey make some sense in theory, but don't work at all in execution.

So, these are those strange creatures they call "the breaks." I've heard tell of them.

He was a lot more sure that that ball was going to fall in than I was.
Either that or he was incredibly lucky.

Yeah, but he's ranged too far to his right on several occasions, at least twice he dove for balls that were almost directly at Murphy.

It really isn't an exaggeration, it's more a case of Duda not knowing that Muffy was pulled around towards the hole so he Duda went flopping for it. It's actually good that he missed it both times because it made for an easier out although it still unnecessarily forced the pitcher to cover. A more seasoned 1Bman has a better idea of where his 2Bman is.

I'm okay with him making judgement errors while he adjusts, like in the Harvey game.
No excuse for not knowing how your infield is setting up. Come Duds, know your situation.

I imagine if he ends up staying there he'll get it down. Might be the best place for him.

Shitty game.

Terrible idea by Young there in the 8th, if he wants to continue doing that he can have another DFA. And eff John Buck for whiffing on 3 pitches following Duda's leadoff hit in the 7th.

Oh, and Marcum sucks balls.

This game is blurry already. Is this about the bunt attempt?

I tend to suspect juicing with this guy. He's always angry, always looking to pull, always looking fastball, always bald. He's like Gary Carter on... well, on steroids.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote:

Mebbe, but we offer him nothing. The only runs he got, he got from the Braves.--- giving Buck a free trip around the bases when he was trying to hit into a triple play.

Both bunt attempts. Got himself in a 0-2 hole for no reason. The bloop hit from Satin was a gift and he was determined to return it.

He gave it right back with 2 out and none on. Unreliable healthwise, inconsistent start to start, 0-9 with an ERA near 6.

When it's time to drop the rotation from six men to five, it seems like Marcum will be the obvious choice.

I just wish he was pitching well enough to be tradeable, but he's not really showcasing himself very well.

He certainly coughed it back up. I just think the real issues remain on the offensive.

Meanwhoops, I have ESPN blocked at work, so I don't know the details, but Rubin writes today that the Mets can save money on Marcum by releasing him. Um, thanks for the effort, but... .

There's got to be someone out there who thinks Marcum can be useful and might kick a minor prospect this way if the Mets pick up most of the salary. I'd even take a salary match for a misfit outfielder.
