so...if Lagares didn't make that catch in CF in the 5th with the bases loaded; how different would the night have played out for Hefner? I didn't see the game, just the running box score, but...even with that play by Lagares, 2 doubles, 10 hits and a walk in 6 innings...maybe I'm missing why Hefner gets the most Schaefer POTG...would some of the other 2013 CFers have kept the score tied at 3-3? Dom Brown, who has decent speed was on 2nd; Ben Revere, who has excellent speed was on 1st (even with Howard on 3rd, that could have been a 3 RBI play for Ruiz)...

When Carlos Ruiz hit a smash to deep center field with the bases loaded and two outs in a tie ballgame in the fifth, Jeremy Hefner initially was unsure whether Juan Lagares could run the shot down.

"I was holding my breath the whole time," Hefner said. "Juan is an unbelievable athlete. I watched him a little bit in spring training. I didn't get a good feel for what kind of athlete he is. To get to watch him pretty much every day, it's exciting, because he's a good player. The bat is coming around, and it's exciting."

Sure enough, Lagares did retreat and corral Ruiz's shot. The rookie then drove in the go-ahead run an inning later as the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park.

"Right off the bat, I just tried to go hard," Lagares said about the Ruiz fly ball. "I go hard to every ball, but I knew that one was over my head. I just tried to go with everything I've got."

Said Terry Collins: "It changes a lot when you've got a center fielder who can go get it in center field. When Juan first got here, he played a little deeper than he is right now. I think he's getting more comfortable with playing here. He realizes, these guys, even though they're big and strong, there's going to be more balls that land in front of you instead of over your head. So he has moved in quite a bit.

"[Outfield coach] Tommy [Goodwin] has spent quite a bit of time with him to get him to understand that he can go get it over his head. And he's done a good job."

On edit...finally saw the replay of the play, it wasn't quite so spectacular...at least not as big of a deal as the online articles are making it out to be...

Re: Schaefer POTG 6/21/13 - Mets 4, Phillies 3

I don't know the rules of the POTG...was commentary & quotes allowed? or is it just supposed to be a score card?

It was a great play, in which he had to run a LONG way to catch a very hard-hit liner; he just-- a la Beltran-- made it look very easy.

I agree on Lagares-vs.-Hefner. But, yeah, this usually goes in the main Schaefer voting thread (which I couldn't find).

Yes, the POTG threads are just for votes; I paste the entire thread into a spreadsheet that tallies the votes, and non-voting posts make the whole process fall apart.

You can make some comments in the same post with your votes, but if you do, please refrain from using numeric characters. (I've noticed that metsmarathon is aware of this rule, for which I'm grateful.)

BAD: "I gave Wright 1 extra point for his catch in the 8th inning."

GOOD: "I gave Wright one extra point for his catch in the eighth inning."

Re: Split from June 21 Schaefer thread

thanks for the explain...I don't usually participate in the POTG thread, so I didn't know about the rules...but after I posted, I kind of figured that there must have been one of those baseball unwritten rules (since there was no commentary at all in the other posts)...

No problem! The rules actually are written somewhere and posted on this forum, but it's been years and I'm not sure where to find them!

And I need to find them, I suppose, so I can update the link on this page.

thanks...didn't know that Pabst owns/owned Schaefer...by the way, that link to the Pabst page no longer works...and if you go to pabst.com, it requires you to type in your date of birth...is the site going to get you drunk just by viewing it?

this link will get you to the Schaefer history page:

Re: Split from June 21 Schaefer thread

Thanks for pointing that out.

Meanwhile, here's the actual official Schaefer voting instructions, as complied by Frayed Knot six years ago.
