MK's Musical Adventures

I just decided to lump all of this news together, because the kid is on a roll.

We've known for a while that he auditioned into the Eastman School of Music for one of their programs (with a partial scholarship to boot), in addition to the week of brass camp and week of jazz camp that he'll be attending. So he's starting out with a musical summer.

This afternoon we received the news that he will be co-drum major of the high school marching band in his upcoming senior year. He has loved marching band from the get go, and I know he will do a wonderful job of leading the group on the field next year.

And if you're interested in checking out some of his original compositions, click here.

I'm very proud of his commitment to music - he really seems to have found his niche.

Dropped the kid off at Freakin' Rutgers for All States rehearsals today. I won't see him again until he takes the stage at Newark Symphony Hall on Saturday.

What's up with kid in front of him?

Go MK! Is this the concert with the wonky ticket sales?

The kid in front of him was probably going over his music.

Yes, tomorrow is the concert with the ticket issues. We finally have tickets in hand for the new venue.

Re: MK's Musical Adventures

Despite the ticket snafu and an hour delay, the kids sounded wonderful and the concert was terrific.

I couldn't shoot anything at the venue, so I settled for this shot of his commemorative pin -

Re: MK's Musical Adventures

The kid's achievements continue to grow. Not only was he the second chair trombone in the All State Wind Ensemble, but based on yesterday's audition he's the first chair trombone in the Regions Jazz Band.

Very few kids play both classical and jazz, let alone play both well. I'm very proud of him!

I wasn't sure to put this here or in the college thread. But I opted for this one because MK's writing about a Billone concert really impressed me. I don't think I could have understood this kind of performance on my own, but the kid was able to make sense of it and make it sound fascinating.

Re: MK's Musical Adventures

Back in January, as we were driving MK back to school for his spring semester, D-Dad asked him what the Wind Ensemble was working on. MK casually replied that they'd be working on some new pieces for Carnegie Hall. Our necks snapped back, "Carnegie Hall?!?!?" To which he replied, "Oh, I thought I told you." We assured him that was the kind of thing we would have remembered.

In any event, the concert is this coming Monday night. We're looking forward to once again seeing these talented young men and women playing in such an iconic venue.

The Carnegie Hall concert was last night, and the kids were magnificent. Their set was A Glimpse of the Eternal by Aaron Perrine, City Trees by Michael Markowski, Rifton Wed by Julie Giroux and Wedding Dance from Symphonic Suite Hasseneh by Jaques Press. It was surreal and amazing to see our son perform in such an iconic venue, and we're proud of the Wind Ensemble for all of the hard work (and, of course, practice) that it took in order to make this happen.

And yes Cooby - I did wave to MK as he took the stage :)
