When I woke up and it was random sportsnight stuff or something, I managed to wait until the scroll said they won. I don't see how you can walk Q, the AAAA light hitting guy (granted the power doesn't matter at that point) for Brown unless you're thinking "oh, well he's hot today" but in that case, you don't walk Buck. Unless of course you're worried that another AB by him swinging that hard literally tears a hole in the fabric of reality. And it's not so much the game-tying walk, but it's the pitch you throw to avoid the game-tying walk. Brown is just the sort of AAA star that is dangerous in the bigs --- if you have to go after him and if you have your back end-pitchers at him. Q was hot, no doubt, but pitch around him a little. Give you pitcher a chance to get him out without giving into him. Don't just quit on him. Basically, it came down to --- do I want to pitch to Buck with a chance to tie the game with a single, or force them to execute a bunt successfully giving Quintanilla with a chance to win the game with a single? Buck-for-a-single vs. Harvey-for-a-sacrifice-and-Quintanilla-for-a-single, with a bigger payoff. I take curtain #2 every time. It can probably be quantifiably measured with some reliability.

There should be a list of basic rules about intentional walks. One, you don't give a bad hitter a free pass. Two, while loading the bases for a double play has some merit, filling the open base with two outs only makes sense when the batter you walk is clearly better than the guy you pitch to. Any hitter becomes more dangerous when you have no place to put him.

I've liked him less and less as the years go on (but I imagine that's standard fare for non-amazing managers (and closers)). It seemed like that first year he was pushing guys to commit and work hard and try to win. Perhaps it's simply that those years featured good first halves and he was trying to keep the pedal to the floor through hard work (since he couldn't affect the talent after all) whereas this year they've been bad most of the season and it's more about him throwing crap at the wall a billion different ways trying to find something that will stick for at least a week or two.
