Marlon Byrd – RF
Josh Satin – 1B
Andrew Brown – LF
Anthony Recker – C
Omar Quintanilla – SS
Jeremy Hefner – RHP

Re: 7/2/13 Snakes @ Mets Corbin v. Hefner

Quint gets a bucketful of hits yesterday while the bats were mostly silent... and he gets rewarded by getting to bat eighth behind Recker

But yeah, I salute it also. It'll be fun to see if Young plays second base positioned 50 feet into the outfield.

And Keith started early tonight with the not listening thing. Not ten seconds after Gary talked about Goldschmidt striking out four times after his 1st inning HR, Keith announced the four K night as if it was previously unmentioned news.

Re: 7/2/13 Snakes @ Mets Corbin v. Hefner

D'backs had a double on a misjudgment by Lagares an inning earleir.

Diving catches from Dykstra were almost always faked. He'd reach a ball running and just skip the last step as he caught it to make it look like a dive.

Rough inning for Lagares but he's pretty awesome.

True, but he's also one of the first guys Ive ever seen dive headfirst into a linedrive and snag it, more than once. To the left and right is hard enough. Diving headfirst into a liner is like nutz. I like it :)

Recker Kabooms the Mets to a 1-0 lead.

Does a catcher matter to the pitcher?

Recker has caught Hefner 5 times so far this season:
7/2: 7 innings; 1 Earned Run allowed; 4 hits; 2 walks; 1 Homerun;
6/27: 6 innings; 1 Earned Run allowed; 5 hits; 1 walk; 0 HRs;
6/21: 8 innings; 2 Earned Runs allowed; 10 hits; 1 walk; 0 HRs;
4/30: 7 innings; 1 Earned Run allowed; 4 hits; 0 walks; 0 HRs;
4/25: 7 innings; 1 Earned Run allowed; 3 hits; 3 walks; 0 HRs;
35 innings; 6 Earned Runs allowed; 1 Homerun; average of 7 innings per start; 1.54 ERA; 27 strikeouts; 7 walks; 32 hits; 6 doubles;

Buck has caught Hefner 12 times so far this season:
60 innings; 37 Earned runs; 12 Homeruns; 14 Doubles; 44 strikeouts; 20 walks; 65 hits; .808 OPS allowed; average of 5 innings per start;

Re: 7/2/13 Snakes @ Mets Corbin v. Hefner

Terry remarked on this dynamic before the numbers said anything about it. His take was that he generally preferred pairing Recker with those pitchers comfortable with calling their own games, and mentioned Hef as one of them. Niese, he said, prefers to have his catcher choose for him and was a better match with Buck. I guess that means is that Terry is less comfortable with Recker's game-calling, I imagine mainly as a function of Buck's superior veteraness and the idea that Recker was a bat-first kinda backup.

Hef has been one of the biggest upside surprises this year. As long as he keeps the homers down he's a really fine pitcher.

Very interesting, especially the flip side. I get Buck being more successful with pitchers who prefer to be led, but Hefner's record suggests that Buck is less successful with independent-minded guys. Does Buck coerce pitchers like Hefner into throwing pitches they are not comfortable with?
