IGT 7/10/13 NYM@SFG - The Unwatchable Lightness of Sweeping

Jul 10 2013 07:20 AM

The Mets, winners of 15 of their last 24, go for the sweep in a day game vs. the San Francisco Giants. Game time is 3:45 EDT, with Zach Wheeler facing the team that traded him away nearly two years ago.

Today's Giants starter is Matt Cain, who beaned David Wright in 2009 and deserves to suffer for it until the end of his days. Cain is having the sort of year I wish on him every year - 5-5, 4.85, and an unsightly ERA+ of 70.

Young makes stuff happen. Walk, SB,error on C, gets to third base. No out.

And Muffy floats a liner to right center for a single and we actually plate a run. Ya know, one of those runs where you get a guy in scoring position and no outs. One of those kinda runs. Remember them?

So, like, Eric Young has totally failed in the stinking department.

Not getting with the suck agenda at all, Ike Davis walks and raises his post-recall OBP to, like, .500.

Remember them? Hell, that's how this club has won 15 of their last 24. Honest Injun.

You get the sense that the Giants saw something in Cain's mechanics that they really didn't like. There's an MRI in his immediate future.

It's also not like this was the first bad start from Cain this season.

It's pretty much how his stint in Vegas went. He started out by drawing a lot of walks, and eventually he got better pitches to hit and the home runs followed. I'm encouraged.

Shouldn't that require a mound visit before a hook? Yea, there's something going on that we are not aware of. He threw 36 pitches.

Actual conversation I had with myself on Monday morning: "Well, Cain's facing us this week, so I'm not putting him in my lineup." SCORE.

Re: IGT 7/10/13 NYM@SFG - The Unwatchable Lightness of Swee

Best sign from Wheeler today (in addition to the whole shut-out/one-hitter thing): only 50 pitches through 4 innings.
12.5 per/inning is a good rate from anyone much less a rookie who's been taking a lot more than that over his short run.

Yea, and the thought occurred to me that Recker

Wheeler after 7:
1 run, 3 hits, 5k, 3bb.
7-1 lead.

101 pitches. Very nice day for the rook.
