Mets Sign No. 25 International Prospect Ali Sanchez July 2, 2013 by Ben Badler Venezuelan catcher Ali Sanchez, the No. 25 international prospect for July 2, has signed with the Mets for $690,000. Sanchez, 16, is 6 feet, 180 pounds with good catch-and-throw skills, quick feet and good hands. Scouts highest on him have been impressed with his ability to hit in games by staying inside the ball with a contact-oriented swing from the right side of the plate. Sanchez has traveled to the Dominican Republic to play in the International Prospect League and trains with Yhonson Lopez. Mets Sign Venezuelan Righthander Luis Silva July 2, 2013 by Ben Badler The Mets have signed Venezuelan righthander Luis Silva for $275,000. Silva, 16, is 6 feet, 170 pounds with long arms, a high-waisted frame and a loose delivery. He throws strikes and generates sink on his fastball, which he can run up to the low-90s at times. He also throws a mid-70s breaking ball and a solid changeup for his age. Silva trained with Julio Bolivar. No related posts.

Yeah, today is the opening day in the int'l signing frenzy. Be nice to see the Mets throw around some of the supposed money they have available here - although these guys are for the most part very young so returns on these investments are less predictable than the draft and those that do work out tend to be even further into the future.

You shouldn't feel old. You should feel STUPID... for not teaching him a good slider and raising him abroad where he's protected from the draft.

The Mets have signed Venezuelan shortstop Luis Carpio, the No. 30 international prospect, for $300,000. Carpio, who turned 16 today, is 6 feet, 155 pounds and showed improvement in both his tools and skills as July 2 approached, which is why some scouts thought he was one of the more underrated players this year. He’s an athletic player who runs well, shows a line-drive swing from the right side and projects to play a premium position, with those highest on him believing he can play shortstop. Several sources raved about Carpio’s work ethic and hard-nosed style of play that should endear him to managers. Carpio trains with Andres Mujica.

With a three and a half years of age difference and where the older one has yet to reach full-season ball and the younger one is years away from even doing that, it'll be a long time, if ever, before there's anything resembling a competition between these two.

More from the international front: You may be aware that international bonuses are now capped, not on a per player basis but, like the draft, on an overall yearly budget per team which varies based on order of finish from the previous year yadda, yadda But did you know that the "slots" that determine the amount of money available can be traded or traded for? Well they can and the Mets have done just that, dealing away minor leaguers OF Julio Concepcion (currently in Brooklyn) and RHP Andres Perez (Appy Lg) to the Angels in exchange for $360,500 of extra bonus money which pushes the Mets' total international bonus pool to $3,025,100. Details here if you're interested in the Int'l pool money which is quite likely being given a tryout for a future Int'l draft
