For a drug violation. Bye bye, Brian Runge.

wasn't Runge one of the few good umpires? or am I confusing him with his dad?

He got suspended in 2007 for bumping Jerry Manuel, but in retrospect who can blame him?

I find the whole secrecy behind these things to be a bit maddening.
I mean, I get why MLB wouldn't specify the details of the drug use itself, but did anyone even hear that he was released from their roster even though it was three weeks ago now?

Crazy.

Howie was mentioning this crew has a 26-year-old rookie umpire, which is something like being a 17-year-old Major Leaguer. He is at 1B tonite, will work the plate tomorrow.

I get that we all want to know, but if your employer fired you for drug use do you think they'd put out a press release? more likely they'd quietly tell clients that you've "moved on" only when it came up. Umpires seem to operate somewhat closer to the normal job expectations of the rest of the world than ballplayers do.

Of course, that privacy can also work against guys... The NFL's CBA prevents them from announcing why a guy was suspended, but if i'm the guy who used Aderrol or didn't check the ingredients on a legal over the counter supplement I would WANT that announced so as not to be lumped in with the steroid guys by the media. the policy actually works to protect the guilty while shedding unnecessary suspicions on the innocent.
