Love the workshirt collar, Sadecki. It's like he's pitching during a weekend furlough from Oshkosh Correctional.

Lucky. I was just working with the '66 cards.

Ha! Great b&w of Clendenon up above. That's the widest angle we've seen of that practice field. Now we know that there's no outfield beyond the first infield -- just another infield.

I ran into two in the same slide show. Not positive about this one tho.

It's hard to tell but I wouldn't rule it out. What about the tree on the extreme left side of the photo -- to the right of Torre's wife? How does that tree compare with the trees in the other shots?
|
Zvon Sep 17 2013 09:07 PM Re: They Might've Been Giants |
That one tree had plenty of time to grow bigger. The one that we can see, there to the left, might be more telling. And if its possible that they trim those every few years, that could be the tree on Butterballs.

Sherman "Roadblock" Jones.

Stumped here. Was Jones a guess?
In the Clendenon photo you can see that these are interlocking fields (could be 3,4), or 2 adjacent. How many fields did they have down there? The corner of each, looking in, might be very similar. The trees are a good indicator but its also possible similar trees were planted all around those parks. Trees can be trimmed and all a that. The light pole is a major indicator. I know you said you see the light pole in Butterballs pic. Looking at the B&W now don't see it. But that one fence pole is thicker for some reason. lol, i like how I'm gettin all X-Files investigative. (In any case if the jutting out fence thing isn't there maybe they were all put in later.) When its a color photo that body of water out there helps to try and nail down the field. But there could be one or two additional fields that have the same view for all I know. This makes the the cut cuzza the lightpole (which also could have been built in similar patterns around the parks down there when you think about it). What do you think the fence addition that juts out is for? A Safe area/dugout kind place for games? A batting cage? And did other fields have that? I bet the fields still are standing down there. I might have to take me a trip to Florida.

Think it may be time to update the subtitle on the masthead to include discussion of a well used spot for photo taking on either the Huggins-Stengel Field or Namoli Fild on the Al Lang Stadium complex ini St. Petersburg, Florida!

Maybe we raise some funds to subsidize your trip. Sell candy bars or something, or even try for a government grant. And then we could publish your findings in a pamphlet, under the CPF imprint. Searching for the Sadecki Spot: The Truth behind the Mystery. Seriously, this is all strangely fascinating.

That's definitely the Sadecki Spot coming out of Dani Torre's right hip. There's no doubt. If you enlarge the photo, you can easily see the tarp covering the front opening to the frame structure. The Torres on the beach in St. Petersburg, Florida.

So it only took the Mets like 15 years before they thought, hey, maybe we should put some stands here. Nah, thats far back by the "Clendenon Corner". Maybe they always were there. We need an aerial view. Yo, maybe we could find this spot through Google map!

The photos aren't necessarily inconsistent. You just can't see the stands from the Clendenon angle. But the stands should be there -- just out of frame.

Wait a minute! I didn't mean that Torre's lying on the ground at the Sadecki Spot. I meant that you can see the Sadecki Spot in the background to the Torre photo.

I getchya. Torre would be across from Clendenon to the right. Ive found a few fields down there with google map. Not field to field with no fence separating. But I think if they updated the fields eventually they would have made them more independent of each other. I'm looking around the Tampa area. Lots of area too look at. Ill just look for a few more minutes and give up for tonight. I think I'll find it at some point. I don't think this is it, right off 78th st. But I expect to find a bunch of areas with fields down there.
