Memories of Shaun Marcum

He pitched well enough at times to justify claims of he wasn't really that bad. But he kind of was.

Yeoman work in the first two marathons.

Kind of a snot toward inquiries after his well-being toward the end.

Good luck, pal.

Wow - I never even got a picture of him....

I remember him pitching the second half of the Harvey marathon, and deserving better than the loss he got.

Other than that - feh....

Re: Memories of Shaun Marcum

Being the little bitch that successfully dictated who would catch him and the result was that his 1 and 9 record went to it's final mark of 1 and 10.

Was really happy with the signing, but boy, what a flop.

This. I considered him a low-risk high-reward signing. It didn't work out. Meh.

Excluding Shaun Marcum, the Mets are one game under .500.

I'll probably remember him for the 8 innings of relief that he pitched in that 20-inning game.

Yea, this^. He pitched so well in that game it made me think, damn, he CAN still pitch. I pulled for him after that. I hoped for the best, but didn't expect the worst.

Always looked like he'd slept in his clothes. On the street.

Never a bad move to get a starter on a cheap make-good deal but could tell in March it was going to end this way. That's the way it ends for a lot of guys.

Indeed. And he was actually a pretty good pickup, all things considered and the Mets knew they were adding a starter in June anyway.

Is it really time for memories though? They could always re-sign him.

Yeah, we usually wait until a player becomes property of another team or retires, but the tide does not wait for the fish.

Re: Memories of Shaun Marcum

A good bet that didn't pay off as many have said already. Deals like this don't hurt much as you aren't stuck with a guy (or worse yet his dead money on the books) past this year.

I don't remember much of anything about his time here other than, as bfmc said above, who the fuck was Shaun Marcum to dictate who catches when he pitches? You're not Greg Maddux, you don't get a personal catcher.

I would guess it was more asking than dictating. That's me.

My gut is that he'll wind up like Capuano, and be an asset for the team that signs him for next year.

Wasn't as bad as his what his record showed, but still was bad more often than good.

Yeah, he was probably a 3-8 pitcher rather than a 1-10 pitcher. Damn bullpen.

Re: Memories of Shaun Marcum

Hey, save some o' that damning for the offense!

If a thirty-year metaphor can be used to describe a two-plus-month tenure, he was like a post-industrial city in a perpetual state of coming around, but you kind of felt was never gonna quite arrive, and his redemption was always going to be in a state of catch-as-catch-can.

Paperwork being readied, per Metsies official Tweet.

The Mets announced today that RHP Shaun Marcum has been placed on waivers for purposes of his unconditional release. The Mets initiated this release when it was confirmed that Marcum was unlikely to pitch competitively again this season.

Re: Memories of Shaun Marcum

I didn't think you could release a player under such circumstances. Why not release Johan, too?

Johan's contract (and his 10/5 rights) might have better language in it? I think Marcum had performance bonuses that kicked in even on the DL, but I am surprised they can just waiver him from the DL. Opens up a 40 man spot though.

That spot on the 40 may be needed for Friday's starter.

Re: Memories of Shaun Marcum

Well, that spot can open up by transitioning a Marcum to the 60-day, I imagine.

But I really thought you were unallowed to release a guy from the DL.

Martino engaging in some low-level character assassination on Twitter.

Andy Martino ?@MartinoNYDN 2m

No one said this explicitly to me today, but Marcum spent a lot of time with young players. Perhaps not considered best influence.

Andy Martino ?@MartinoNYDN 2m

Let's just say that no one told Johan Santana he couldn't rehab in team facilities, tho done for the year. Ya dig?

This was actually an earlier tweet:

Told that #Mets will still pay Marcum's rehab and medical expenses. They didn't want him rehabbing in NY or PSL (more)
