I'll take the cartoon dancing girls and the mini skirts, thanks.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

It's win-win, from my position. I'd really like to wipe the smugness off of Reggie's stupid face, though.

Talk about Frenemies, though. After seventy years, why don't Reggie and Veronica get on with it, stab Archie and Betty in their respective backs, and get on with their twisted little shadow romance?

Have so many dysfunctional friendships and romances ever played out so long?

"You know, when I give it some thought, I think I'd much rather watch a smirking, vaguely creepy Ron Dante."

First smile I've had all day. Great stuff.

Toons, all the way. Betty works the tambourine way better than Dante.

I guess I didn't know that Reggie was the lead singer.

Bubblegum Pop lends itself to animation.

Oddly enough I associate "Sugar Sugar" with how I first heard it, as part of the Stars on 45 Medley.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

The animated ones are more life-like and appear more likely to be actually singing.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

I had a poll up a while back of top bands from Saturday morning cartoons, but I couldn't find enough material. Good time to re-launch.

If you created a Saturday morning cartoon that featured a band, I considered it appointment viewing.

IOW, you had a thing for Josie and the Pussycats.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

Well, they certainly had the advantage in the polling that any teen-chick-rockers-in-catsuits might be expected to have (the Pussycats also had a tremendous musical advantage), but my cartoon band tastes and cartoon girlfriend tastes reached much further afield.

Animated or Not Animated? Why choose?

From this CD. I picked it up on the cheap a few years back. Kind of fun for a listen or two. This track, the Liz Phair and the Matthew Sweet tracks were my favorites. If you click on the song title at that link there are a few more videos (Ramones, Butthole Surfers, one or two more).

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

In the animated Bradys, Jan does that strange foot thing when she's playing the organ too. Never figured it out. Surely not foot pedals?

Didn't vote, though the real live singer might deserve a pity vote.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

Coo, you've picked on just a hint of the shamelessly lazy stuff going on at The Filmation assembly line. Beyond Jan's (admittedly gorgeous) leg, the Archies and The Brady Kids used the same animation template for the performance sequences. For the six-piece Bradys, they just added Cindy off on the side of the five-piece Archies. Otherwise each character had his or her own other-universe motion doppleganger: Greg/Archie, Peter/Reggie, Marcia/Betty, Jan/Veronica, Bobby/Jughead. I was eight and I wanted to sue somebody.

Did they think I wasn't watching TV 24-7 and wouldn't pick up on their chicanery? They were mistaken.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

Not just Cindy....Cindy with a guitar. Hilarious.

I think these song sequences might have been what killed my love for the Bradys. (except Jan, I still love her)

BTW, the Jackson 5 had a Saturday morning show too...I wonder if they had the same set up.

Excellent detective work Edgy!

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

OMG - I remember the Jackson 5 animated series. I think the Osmonds had one too.

And going back further, there was a Beatles animated series.

The Monkees weren't animated, but they might as well have been.

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

LOL, I loved the Monkees! Back then I didn't like Mike because I thought he was boring but when I grew up I realized he was actually the funniest one.
My sister and I used to fight over whether to watch the Monkees or Gilligan's Island because they were on at the same time for a while but I was never really too upset when she won the argument

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

I like the animated "Sugar Sugar" better...

and in the same type of debate as the "Ginger or Maryanne" debate:
Betty or Veronica?

I'd vote for Veronica (and Maryanne)...and I never noticed it before but, Veronica looks a bit like Winnie Cooper in that video...

Re: Animated or Not Animated?

speaking of Betty/Veronica & Ginger/Maryanne (and even Batgirl/Catwoman)...Did anyone realize that the same woman did the cartoon voices for all of these rivals?
