Day Three of Gettysburg. Pickets Charge. About 4,000 dead on both sides from that maneuver alone.

Tip of the hat to the brave Irishmen of the 69th Pennsylvania who held the line while the 71st retreated and the 72nd failed to charge at all.

The monument to the 69th Penn, from the perspective from which they repelled the attack.

Re: 150

i took a driving tour of the battlefield with my family some years ago. We had an audio tape that narrated the battle as we drove to specified points around the area. It bored the crap out of my kids (naturally), but i was fascinated. Now every time i pass some doc about it on the history channel or something, i feel compelled to stop and watch. The Ted Turner-produced movie, based on the book THE KILLER ANGELS, with Jeff Daniels as a brave union colonel, is also surprisingly good and probably the best movie version of the battle I've seen. they actually did a prequel to it 10 years later GODS AND GENERALS, with many of the same actors playing the same roles. The epic Ken Burns doc is also amazing.

"twitter account worth following" is an oxymoron.
