Have to say I'm relieved to have a day off from Ike. I'm afraid we cannot win with him this year, big hit the other night notwithstanding.

Allan Dykstra?

Re: Braves @ Mets, 7/25: Wheelie Big Game

... is still hitting. He's gone .323 / .405 / .645 // 1.051 over his last 10, and is at .304 / .462 / .582 // 1.044.

Can the world take a firstbaseman whos greatest weapon is the base on balls?

Sixth in the league in batting average. First (by 48 points) in OBP. First (by 15 points) in slugging. First by .74 poitns in OPS.

He's clearly the best player in the Eastern League this year. And Puello is clearly second. One off the homer lead for a guy that's not really considered a power hitter.

The .278 IsoP number isn't bad either.

Nothing against Dykstra, whose having a career minor league season, but it seems to me we already have a 1bman on the roster hitting .340. How about we just play him more?

Re: Braves @ Mets, 7/25: Wheelie Big Game

He was SD's 1st round pick in 2008, played 3 years in their system at A ball, without much success, then moved to the Mets.
Now he's 26, playing his 3rd consecutive year at AA/ Binghamton, either having a breakout season or beating up on less experienced younger kids, depending on your viewpoint.
But, hell, i'd give him a shot. The dude has got power.

That sounds a lot like "beating up on kids" to me but you never know. Where do the Mets put him though? how many ABs is he going to get with Ike and Satin here? Unfortunately there are only so many major league plate appearences and the Mets already have 2 not so young but not old options at 1B that they need to decide on (3 if you think that Duda does more harm than good in the outfield). Maybe someone else likes what he's doing and he nets you a relief prospect.

I had to check on Ralph with the Spahn business. I wanted him to be right, and he almost was. He said Spahn hit 37 dingers.
oe: still pretty damn impressive he almost got it right.
Spahn was also a good hitter, hitting at least one home run in 17 straight seasons, and finishing with an NL career record for pitchers, with 35 home runs. Wes Ferrell, who spent most of his time in the American League, holds the overall record for pitchers, with 37.

Also from Wiki:
First signed by the Boston Braves before the 1940 season, Spahn reached the major leagues in 1942 at the age of 20. He clashed with Braves manager Casey Stengel, who sent him to the minors after Spahn refused to throw at Brooklyn Dodger batter Pee Wee Reese in an exhibition game.

Spahn had pitched in only 4 games, allowing 15 runs (10 earned) in 15-2/3 innings. Stengel later said that it was the worst managing mistake he had ever made: I said "no guts" to a kid who went on to become a war hero and one of the greatest lefthanded pitchers you ever saw. You can't say I don't miss 'em when I miss 'em.

The 1942 Braves finished next to last, and Stengel was fired the following year. Spahn was reunited with his first manager 23 years later, for the even more woeful last-place New York Mets, and---referring to Stengel's success with the 1949-60 New York Yankees---later quipped, "I'm probably the only guy who played for Casey before and after he was a genius."

I did not know any of that stuff^

Guess it started to bother him as the game went on.

Should have been a G-R Double but that's not a reviewable call.
The Braves problem was that their OFers assumed it was going to be called and stopped playing it.

Fredi has been ejected.

And then the ALMOST problem is that Murphy assumed the call too and slowed down but Wright didn't. If the Braves were more alert they might have had a play on Murph at the plate even though they didn't have one at David at 3rd.

.400 OBP too. I wouldn't rule out the more rest he's gotten (via a couple of starts for Recker and the break) Of course, nearly a .400 BAbip too. But it's all gravy now as d'Arnaud is playing. They'll have a replacement ready for him soon.
