Sandy & Mike

taking notes as he talks

Stockpiling talent, clear payroll and be as competitive as we can. Byrd not costing $$, then a Q of what kinda talent we get back and we still gotta be competitive. If we can play well in 2nd half, pleasant change and will lead to pleasant expectations going into 2014.

Fatcessa asks 5 minute question:

We've lacked depth and it's refelected in 2nd half performance. ... players can emereg at ML level with Hef, Gee. We have so much dept in SP area, guys piutching well at ML and MinorL levels.

We don;t have to have allstars at each pos. we need a quality core of players who we can build around. ...

We need flexibility on 40-man roster. Have to protect guys like DeGrom, not required to protect Syndergaard, Montero. Montero also needs inning limited.

d'Arnaud to be seen Monday, expect he will get green light then. Hope to see him in September.

Ike could be a big part of future but depends on perforamnce and consistency. Less time remaining now than there was. We need to feel that we've given it a full run by end of the season. He is arb-eligible. We are going to try to win as many games as we can in the 2nd half. If that means Satin plays more so be it.

Tejada: We have to be open minded about SS. nbever had power so value was OBP and that's declined 3 years. Defensively, range not what it was. We have to look at what he have. He has to work back to ML team.

Hef: Sometimes a tweak can make a difference. In his case it was a hip turn. Terry told him you can't give up so many HRs. Worked with Warthen to gain velocity, hide baseball better.

Gee: Always had great change up. Gotten back to level before circ. problem. We are now throwing a guy out there every nite who gives us a chance to win.

Niese: Long tossing in FLA now. Hopefully back soon.

Guys like satin, Edgin - very good since we've been back -- has given us CAHNfidence to bring up the next guy. at this point there is less reluctanace to make change. You have to give guys out of ST a chance to perform, but now we say let's see what this guy can do.

Looking at what we've endured we are in a good position to do that. We are developing the nucleus of a team, homegrown that can be comp in a hurry if we improve our offense. We have to bring up the kind of players who can bring uor RS up. Likes approach of Satin, Wright... begin

We had too many players who were too aggressive

We have reworked bullpen 3 times. Of the 7 guys now, 5 we didn;t have before, and we'll start developing guys in the system so we don;t have to go to the market for them every year.

We won;t be in the bottom tier of the market this offseason. We can be in the middle.

If we have 5 solid 3s we like 6-8 guys who can be No. 3s

We are canvassing the market. Been in touch with one club on a player who are signed for next year.

Hard to know when you've turned the corner. But we had a low ebb a month ago and showed up at season ticket holder meeting. I told them we were getting to end of gestation period and asked for them to hang with us. We know the $50 M off books soon.

I am happy what I'v seen over last month.

Good stuff and good typing. I like this part.

Tejada: We have to be open minded about SS. nbever had power so value was OBP and that's declined 3 years. Defensively, range not what it was. We have to look at what he have. He has to work back to ML team.

Here he is admitting what really he didn't have to (range has declined) and what Mike never would've asked him about (OBP), so good on him for owning up on Tejada's troubles.

If we have 5 solid 3s we like 6-8 guys who can be No. 3s

Not sure what to make of that.

Interesting how confident he is that Gee and Hef have turned a corner and are not merely getting good results for the time being.

Thanks Lunchy. much appreciated.

Not sure what this means...starting pitchers? 6-8 additional guys in the minors?

Interesting difference than with Ike. Seems like with Ike they want to see results, with Tejada they want to see process and that can be worked on in the minors. unfair or not, it seems like Ike's getting a "prove you don't belong" and Ruben a "Prove you do"

Re: Sandy & Mike

Yeah, Mike kept interrupting him so he couldn't complete a thought. Mike asked if Harvey & Wheeler could be No. 1 and 2, and he said he'd prefer to think of a team having a bunch of guys you could consider 3s, with some rising about to be 1s and 2s and others falling to be 4s and 5s. The point he was trying to make was he was interested in depth of starting pitching. He was also CAHNfident the bullpen was at a point where it's better.

In general, he sounded very iffy on Tejada, acknowledged with arb coming up there were decisions to make on Ike, and don't if I recall sad anything about Doodoo.

Also, assured the Mets could be a FA player in the offseason but not one playing at the bottom of the market.

Didn't sound like he was about to trade Byrd, does place a value on winning the year out for the momentum it can bring to 2014.

Makes sense, I guess. Ike's a few years older.

I'm fine with all of it except:

Momentum from 1 game to another is bullshit; from 1 SEASON to another is bullshit of a rarified sort. And i think Sandy knows this. So he seems to just be covering for his bosses who probably want him to win as many games as possible in the 2nd half so they can sell more product. The notion of trading a single win by trading guys like Byrd and Buck, even if just for A-ball talent with some upside, is clearly anethema to this organization.

no point in getting bent out of shape about it, though, since its entirely speculative. But its speculation that fits the evidence.

It's all bullshit. He's not gonna tell us what the Mets are gonna do or who's gonna get traded or who they have their eye on. Understandably. And he's gonna paint the future as reasonably optimistic as he can. Maybe even unreasonably optimistic. But the future will always be bright. Like every other speech.

Yeah. Why should he talk at all? I mean, I'm getting upset just thinking about it. The gall of that eff-in' water-carrier, y'know?
