Reporter claims Davey Johnson dissed Citi Field

Read for yourself: NL All-Star Game Notebook: Davey Johnson slams Citi Field By Denis Gorman Published: July 15, 2013 One of New York City’s favorite sons is not exactly enamored with the Citi. Davey Johnson, who is serving as one of manager Bruce Bochy’s coaches, used his time during the National League’s All-Star Game media availability to implore MLB to consider Nationals Park as a host venue for the Midsummer Classic while tweaking Citi Field. “The All-Star Game, I don’t know how they pick that thing, but I’ve been to a ton of ballparks and I think our ballpark is player-friendly, fan-friendly. Look around here,” Johnson said, alluding to the Willets Point neighborhood surrounding Citi Field before taking aim at the advertising throughout the park. “It’s awful. Awful. Can't remember the exact line, but Davey was interviewed by Guys! when the Nats were in town and he rather backhandedly said, regarding Citi Field, that he liked the shower in his office and went on to criticize the dimensions from both a hitting and pitching standpoint.

Who's he anyway? Nationals Park? Hah, you think they won't slap a name on that as soon as they get any sustained success that it'd sell for anything? You think they won't slap an advertisement into every crevice once the price points suggest it's worthwhile? For every advertisement you see on a baseball field, that's a $1 your ticket prices didn't go up.

I'm not a huge fan of all that advertising either but it is what is. Personally I think the ads on the outside of the stadium are worse. 'What's that building over there? Wait, is it a building or a giant box wrapped in billboards...?' And who cares what Davey Johnson thinks anyway? I love the guy and will always have great memories of him and the '86 Mets but who appointed him arbiter of good taste?

I first went to Nats Park like three or four years ago and noticed at that time that they had exactly four advertisers each of which had two small signs at different locales in the stadium (like one on the wall and one attached to the scoreboard or something similar). I know they've added more since and possibly even more this year based on last year's on-field success. The larger point being here, it's not like all stadiums that have less advertising signage are that way because they make some sort of aesthetic decision to limit things. Sometimes it's because they have trouble attracting more and if they could cover more places they would. I'm sure the Nats would have loved to open their new park with more advertising than what could be placed on an average bedroom wall but probably found companies either unwilling to back a new venture or (knowing that town a bit) if they did want to attach themselves to sports were probably already in the huge line of folks trying to hitch their wagon to the Redskins. And, yes, I've long gotten a kick out of the idea (noted somewhere up above) that modern advertisements are often considered to be crass commercialism but things like the Abe Stark: 'Hit Sign - Win Suit' sign, or 'Ballantine Blasts' and White Owl Wallops' are treated as warm nostalgia.

Couldn't a team charge whatever the market bears for advertising? So in a down year, the team would charge less per square footage or whatever the rate is based on, and increase prices if there's an anticipated increase in attendance. I'm sure that each side has worked out these rates to some supposed science. Do teams really forego advertising in down years, or do they just charge less?

But I don;t have the energy to sustain whatever objecting here would have led to.
